Minimum 4-5 sentence be positive , by saying I agree with you…. POST #1 HELLO … RE: What makes a good parennt After reviewing Baumrinds parenting styles , I found the information very informative and interesting . New parents should review and decide what kind of parenting style they would like to produce with their children before having children in order for the best possible oucome of parenting . I feel as though a lot of parents that produce neglectful parenting styles are unaware of the neglect because they are uneducated on the different styles and their long term affects .However I do understand that behavior is learned so if parents were given a negative parenting style then they are more likely to produce a negative parenting styles . On the other hand some parents experience a negative parenting style and decide that they want to provide a better one for their children so that they do not experience the same trauma and pass that on to their children as well . I believe that I was raised with an authoritive parenting style consisting of demands and openness from my parents . My parents were also very responsive with my behavior weather it be a good or bad response . Responding to both kinds of behavior allowed me to acknowledge which of my behavior was good and was better compared to what was negative and bad . My mother was always very involved and helped me with day to day decisions while monitoring but allowing me to make my own responsible choices . My mother also had set punishments and rules that shaped me into knowing what was right or wrong . In example, my room had to be cleaned in order for me to go out with my friends and now I am someone who keeps my room clean . My parents discussedtheir expectations for me so that when I fell short of those expectations I knew why and I suffered the consequences . My mother also equipped me with the tools and knowledge that I needed to achieve those expectations . I was taught to take responsibility for my actions and with that I developed into someone who was very independent at a very young age . They did not keep problems from me so that I could be prepared but filtered out the knowledge of things that would harm me .With that being said , I could not agree more that parenting styles have tremendous affects , long term , on every individual . POST #2 Minimum 4-5 sentence be positive , by saying I agree with you…. HELLO … What makes a good parent? What I think makes a good parent is incredibly subjective. I am only 19 years old so my perspective may be very different from those who are already parents or those old enough to be my parents. Diana Baumrind addresses the four types of parenting she described as authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, and disengaged (Arnett & Jensen, 2019). As I was reading more into these categories, they were sounding familiar because I had initially learned about these styles in high school, however, I learned that these categories were derived from older research on middle-class white families. We know that this kind of research cannot be taken as applicable worldwide due to the lack of variation among test groups. The fact that it is older research is not so much the bigger issue considering that older research does not equal bad but I found myself rethinking my connection because my parents are not white individuals so this research cannot entirely encapsulate their reasoning and cultural input. With that though, my experience does somewhat reflect what she identified as long-term effects. I am curious to see how much more my experience will relate or not relate as I age into adulthood. I think that good parents try their best and love their children. A good parent plans and always takes into consideration how their actions will impact their child’s life. A lot of the problems children face with their parents can be solved or improved with the parent being willing to have a conversation with them and be able to demonstrate proper coping and problem-solving. Good parents know they cannot be perfect but at least they try their best to make sure all needs are met at the bare minimum. POST #3 Minimum 4-5 sentence be positive, by saying I agree with you…. Hello … Enough food but the wrong food? In developed countries, a lot of children lack the needed nutrients despite consuming a lot of food. The reason is the easy access to unhealthy foods such as fast food which results in them not getting an adequate amount of nutrition. An example of this is high calcium deficiencies. Calcium is needed for growth, strong bones, and teeth. This can be found in milk, but because children are drinking more soft drinks instead of healthy ones like milk, they are lacking the needed calcium for their developing bodies (Arnett, 2016, pg. 237). In developing countries, it is the opposite problem. They are suffering from malnutrition because of the lack of access to food in general. Therefore, lack of food, lack of nutrition. “Lack of protein is experienced by 25% of children under the age of 5 worldwide” (Arnett, 2016, pg. 237). This along with iron deficiency affects these children’s development. Iron deficiency can affect their moods, levels of energy, and their cognitive development. Overall, lack of nutrition affects not only their physical but their cognitive development too. This can affect their learning retention in school and energy levels overall. Whether it’s a fatigue or hyper-activity crash, their loss of motivation can greatly impact their lives. I know adequate nutrition written by a registered and license dietitian for a child are nutrients that are supplemental to their growth both mentally and physically. I found an article that highlights the top five nutrients children need. These are: protein, iron, calcium vitamin-D and omega-3s (Coleman, n.d.). Protein helps improve mood, gain muscle mass, help energy levels and strength immune system. You can find protein through poultry, meat, nuts and seeds. Iron helps increase rapid growth, and motor and cogitive development. Iron rich foods include lean meat, iron-fortified breakfast cereals, leafy greens and raisins. Vitamin D is important for bone health. You can get vitamin D through sunlight as well as eating fish, dairy and eggs. Calcium helps children’s bones grow and develop normally, helps muscle function, nerve transmission and hormone secretion. You can find calcium in dairy such as yogurt, cottage cheese, milk, etc. Last but not least, omega-3s, specifically DHA and EPA help cognitive development. You can find these in fish and seafood as omega-3s are quite present in fishand algal oils. This article overall highlights the essential nutrients needed for children and simplifies them down into five. POST #4 Minimum 4-5 sentence be positive , by saying I agree with you…. HELLO.. Enough food but the wrong food? As a kid in elementary and high school, I remember so many campaigns such as “Got milk” and “Got vegetables” and so on. I would see those posters all over my school. I was lucky to be a child in school when Michelle Obama was the first lady. She has done so much when it comes to healthy eating and making sure schools provide more fruits, vegetables, grains, low-fat/fat free milk, etc. The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act made sure all this would happen and decrease childhood obesity from all the processed foods that are now heavily in our markets (Ashlie Chandler, 2020). Within developing countries, people starve and are suffering from malnutrition and not having access to any food at all. There is not only a lack of nutrition, there is a lack of food that they cannot even eat. Food is needed to survive and be able to function. “Lack of protein is experienced by 25% of children under the age of 5 worldwide” (Arnett, 2016, pg. 237). This causes iron-deficiencies that stunt development physically and mentally. Not getting the right nutrients can affect energy levels, cognitive development, and mood. Children cannot learn and be successful when they are starving, fatigued, and have low motivation to do anything at all. In developed countries, it is a whole different story. As developing countries do not have food, developed countries have a lot of food, just not the right nutrients to develop and be successful. Calcium is a very important mineral in child growth because it makes our teeth and bones stronger. That is why when I was a child the Got Milk campaign was so widely prominent because of how crucial it is to childhood development. Here, we have so much processed foods and soft drinks that create obesity and malnutrition. Kids now drink soft drinks and juices with so much sugar and they lack the calcium needed for developing and growing (Arnett, 2016, pg. 237). An adequate representation of healthy eating is “choose my plate” which is a picture of a plate sectioned out into proportions of foods (fruits, grains, vegetables, protein, and dairy) we should be getting everyday and it is attached below. This was all I saw in my childhood. My mother made sure my brother and I got enough grains, fruits, and vegetables in our diet and I am very grateful for her doing that for us.
