Title:  Assignment: Societal Factor that is Affecting Nursing Education

Nursing forms one of the most important health care areas as concerns the quality of life of patients. Founded on the central tenet of caring, nursing strives to protect, promote and optimize the health status and abilities for purposes of cushioning human beings against any form of sickness that may befall them. The nursing profession helps in the provision of care to the sickly people and alleviation of suffering of the same category of a population via numerous methodologies. According to numerous literature on nursing, the provision of holistic care that involves diagnosis and management of pathological conditions forms a central role of the nursing profession. One of the ways that nurses play their role involves the application of health promotion strategies.

The creation of nursing or patient education curriculum to guide nurses or patients concerning the avoidance and management of disease conditions precedes these promotional undertakings by nurses. However, Gonen and Lev-Ari (2016) reveal that the establishment of the curriculum cannot occur without consideration of certain societal factors whose roles receive prominence in the area. Indeed, scholars have examined several of these factors with the objective of understanding their influence on the process. Thus, an analysis of an article covering one of the factors will crucially contribute to the comprehension of how a societal role can influence the creation of patient/nurse education curriculum.

The society possess certain expectations concerning the objectives that should receive priority when designing a nursing/patient education curriculum. The composition of the patient population in the United States has become increasingly diverse and thus there exists a need for the curriculum to reflect this diversity. Nicole and Patricia (2014) examined the level and comfort of cultural

competence of nurses with varying educational qualifications when attending to patients from multifarious cultural backgrounds. Indeed, the article looked to highlight the areas in cultural competence that nursing curriculum can strengthen in order to align with the increasingly diverse patient population. A prospective, cross sectional and descriptive study design was used by the researchers to identify the existence of these areas. The analysis of the results revealed that the existing curriculum lacks cultural diversity training for both undergraduate-degree nurses and graduate-degree nurses and also identified specific areas that stakeholders should address.

Reason for Choosing the ArticleAssignment  Societal Factor that is Affecting Nursing Education

The present author elected the article by Nicole and Patricia (2014) because of the manner in which it approached the issue of the absence of cultural competence in nursing education curriculum for both undergraduate-degree nurses and graduate-degree nurses. By comparing the two categories of nurses and revealing that both of them do not receive adequate cultural competence training, the article fortified the need to address this societal issue so as to improve the quality of care offered by nurses. Further, the two authors identified specific areas of need as regards cultural competence training for both undergraduate and graduate nurses. In this respect, the present author would implement the specific identifications of the article to improve the existence of cultural competence in nursing both for the patient and the nurse. By integrating the area into the curriculum, nurses will demonstrate cultural competence when handling patients and even when designing promotional materials for them.

Be advised that I grade based on quality and not necessarily the number of words you post. A minimum of TWO references should be used for your initial post. For your response post, you do not need references as personal experiences would count as response posts. If you however cite anything from the literature for your response post, it is required that you cite your reference. You should include a minimum of THREE references for papers in this course. Please note that references should be no more than 5 years old except recommended as a resource for the class. Furthermore, for each discussion board question, you need ONE initial substantive response and TWO substantive responses to either your classmates or your instructor for a total of THREE responses. There are TWO discussion questions each week, hence, you need a total minimum of SIX discussion posts for each week. I usually post a discussion question each week. You could also respond to these as it would count towards your required SIX discussion posts for the week.

I understand this is a lot of information to cover in 5 weeks, however, the Bible says in Philippians 4:13 that we can do all things through Christ that strengthens us. Even in times like this, we are encouraged by God’s word that we have that ability in us to succeed with His strength. I pray that each and every one of you receives strength for this course and life generally as we navigate through this pandemic that is shaking our world today. Relax and enjoy the course!
