The society possess certain expectations concerning the objectives that should receive priority when designing a nursing/patient education curriculum. The composition of the patient population in the United States has become increasingly diverse and thus there exists a need for the curriculum to reflect this diversity. Nicole and Patricia (2014) examined the level and comfort of cultural
competence of nurses with varying educational qualifications when attending to patients from multifarious cultural backgrounds. Indeed, the article looked to highlight the areas in cultural competence that nursing curriculum can strengthen in order to align with the increasingly diverse patient population. A prospective, cross sectional and descriptive study design was used by the researchers to identify the existence of these areas. The analysis of the results revealed that the existing curriculum lacks cultural diversity training for both undergraduate-degree nurses and graduate-degree nurses and also identified specific areas that stakeholders should address.

The present author elected the article by Nicole and Patricia (2014) because of the manner in which it approached the issue of the absence of cultural competence in nursing education curriculum for both undergraduate-degree nurses and graduate-degree nurses. By comparing the two categories of nurses and revealing that both of them do not receive adequate cultural competence training, the article fortified the need to address this societal issue so as to improve the quality of care offered by nurses. Further, the two authors identified specific areas of need as regards cultural competence training for both undergraduate and graduate nurses. In this respect, the present author would implement the specific identifications of the article to improve the existence of cultural competence in nursing both for the patient and the nurse. By integrating the area into the curriculum, nurses will demonstrate cultural competence when handling patients and even when designing promotional materials for them.

I strongly encourage that you do not wait until the very last minute to complete your assignments. Your assignments in weeks 4 and 5 require early planning as you would need to present a teaching plan and interview a community health provider. Your initial discussion post should be a minimum of 200 words and response posts should be a minimum of 150 words. Be advised that I grade based on quality and not necessarily the number of words you post. A minimum of TWO references should be used for your initial post. For your response post, you do not need references as personal experiences would count as response posts. If you however cite anything from the literature for your response post, it is required that you cite your reference. You should include a minimum of THREE references for papers in this course. Please note that references should be no more than 5 years old except recommended as a resource for the class. Furthermore, for each discussion board question, you need ONE initial substantive response and TWO substantive responses to either your classmates or your instructor for a total of THREE responses. There are TWO discussion questions each week, hence, you need a total minimum of SIX discussion posts for each week. I usually post a discussion question each week. You could also respond to these as it would count towards your required SIX discussion posts for the week.
