Self-esteem is a central aspect of an individual’s ego. It states a personal opinion on how a person views himself or herself. Self-enhancement and self-verification, on the other hand, are essential concepts to an individuals self-esteem as they can have either a positive or negative influence. For instance, people with poor lifestyle choices with high self-esteem tend to get involved in beneficial events, which encourages self-enhancement (Schaupp & Carter, 2016). On the contrary, a defensive self-enhancement mainly focuses on individuals who have low self-esteem driving them to overcompensate self-enhancement in such a way that their peers will view them of having a positive self-verification. Additionally, social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram play a significant role in an individual’s self esteem.
With the aspect of self-enhancement and self-verification, I noticed that most individuals on Facebook would post on subjects which bear a resemblance to the desire of satisfactory feedback such that their peers can approve of them hence attaining self-enhancement. For instance, most people post videos or pictures of babies or animals, which are universally appealing for being cute or funny, hence gaining a high number of positive feedback that makes earns theirs peers approval (Rook, 2015). However, social media has both
negative and positive influence on an individuals self-esteem. Positively, an individual will, on Facebook or any other social media platform, be able to keep in touch with their relatives and friend across the universe in addition to keeping up will the current trends hence making them feel relevant, boosting their self-esteem. On the other hand, social media can impact them negatively by causing depression as a result of getting negative feedback from respondents hence merely approved by their friends hence lowering their self-esteem (Holt-Lunstad et al., 2015). Thus, inasmuch as social media might be a place of fun, some people also complain of bullying and jealousy which affects them negatively.
