Title:  Assignment: Pew Health Professional’s Commission Competencies for Healthcare Workers

The adoption of the Affordable Care Act is perceived as one of the major milestones in the American history that improved access to care in the US. However, its implementation has revealed significant strengths as well as weaknesses in the American healthcare system that must be improved for the desired outcomes in healthcare to be achieved. One of the identified weaknesses is the need to expand the roles played by the nurses in the delivery of population-focused care. As a result, the Institute of Medicine developed a vision in their report dubbed Initiative on the Future of Nursing that aimed at guiding the adoption of interventions that would address issues affecting the expanded roles of the nurses in the healthcare system. Therefore, this research paper examines the competencies from the Pew Health Professional’s Commission Competencies for Healthcare Workers; my role in creating the problems identified in IOM report, my role in solving the identified problems, and plan that will enable me to meet the identified competencies.

Chosen Competencies

Provide Evidence-Based, Clinically Competent Care

Nurses have a critical role in providing care that addresses the prioritized and perceived needs of their populations. They utilize health interventions that promote patient-centeredness in practice. They also utilize the best-clinical evidence to ensure that the health needs of their populations are met. According to Dang and Dearholt (2017), evidence-based practice promotes outcomes such as improved quality of care, cost-efficiency, and patient satisfaction with the care that they receive. The use of best available clinical evidence implies that the healthcare interventions used promote the safety needs of the patient. There is also enhanced quality of care due to the prioritization of the patient’s needs in the provision of care. Therefore, nurses should strive towards ensuring that behaviors that promote evidence-based practice are adopted in their settings.

Nurses have the critical role in promoting the realization of the goals of primary care. Primary care entails the provision of a

wide range of services that addresses the needs of the population. They include disease prevention, health promotion, and counseling, and health maintenance, education of the patients, diagnosis, and treatment of the health problems facing the population. It is therefore important that healthcare providers work in collaboration with patients and other healthcare stakeholders to meet the needs of the different populations in their settings. Most importantly, nurses should strengthen the support systems that are used to achieve the goals of primary care (Sare & Ogilvie, 2010).

Improve Access to Health Care for those with Unmet Health Needs

Nurses have the role to ensure that equity is promoted in access and utilization of healthcare services. They act as the advocates for the vulnerable beings in their societies. They also ensure that their rights to access to high quality and affordable care are promoted. There is also the need for nurses to utilize their knowledge in nursing research to investigate the ways in which barriers to healthcare can be addressed in their settings. Through it, they promote equity in access to the health care by the vulnerable populations that they serve in their environments.

Provide Culturally Sensitive Care to a Diverse Society

Nurses provide their care to individuals from diverse backgrounds. The diversity implies that the patients have different beliefs, values, and practices that influence their uptake of health services. It is important that nurses promote holism in practice through the provision of care that respects the diverse needs of the patients. The focus of providing nursing care should not only focus on the disease but also the influence of culture on the manner in which the disease is managed. Therefore, nurses should have the desired cultural competence to provide appropriate care to the patients from different cultural backgrounds.

Continue to Learn and Help Others Learn

Nursing is a constantly changing profession. Nurses also have to address newly emerging health needs of the populations that they serve. This implies that nurses should engage in activities that promote their continuity in knowledge acquisition. They have to ensure that they remain up-to-date on new practice guidelines that aim at promoting safety, quality, efficiency, and professionalism in the nursing practice. Nurses achieve these outcomes by enrolling in new educational and training programs that increase their knowledge and skill level. They also have to promote the development of others by interventions such as coaching and mentorship. Through these interventions, they will continue to learn and help others learn.

My Role in Creating Problems in IOM Report

While the IOM report recognizes the need for the expanded role for the nurses and other healthcare providers, there exist barriers that hinder the realization of this goal. The barriers or challenges include regulatory and policy, healthcare system fragmentation, high turnover rate among nurses, difficulties in transition from school into practice by the nurses, and demographic challenges such as the aging workforce (Garner, 2010). I have contributed to the development of some of these problems in a number of ways. The first one is lack of policy advocacy. It is important that nurses advocate for policy change to expand their scope of practice. For example, nurse practitioners should have the authority to practice fully according to their area of specialization. A lack of policy advocacy from the nurses hinders the adoption of regulations that expand the role of the nurses in healthcare. The other way in which I have contributed to the problems that were identified in the IOM report is my lack of active engagement in the examination of factors contributing to a high rate of turnover among graduate nurses. It is evident that most of the graduate nurses leave their jobs during their early years of employment. Some of the factors that have been cited to contribute to it include burnout, dissatisfaction with their jobs, and rigid organizational structures. Despite the existence of such evidence, it is important that nurses engage healthcare stakeholders in examining the ways in which the issue can be addressed in our modern healthcare environment.

My Role as Part of the Solution

My roles as part of the solution to the problems identified by the IOM are varied. One of them is a coordinator. The identified issues can be addressed by ensuring that there is active stakeholder engagement in examining them. As a result, my role entails coordinating all the activities that are needed for the success in the engagement processes. This includes determining efficient use of resources that are needed to address the problem. The other role is resolving conflicts. Often, the stakeholders involved in examining the issues might have differing views, opinions, and concerns that increase the risk of conflicts among them. It therefore increases the use of effective negotiation skills to ensure that the concerns of the involved parties are taken into consideration.  The other role is an investigator or researcher. I need to undertake research on the most effective strategies that are needed to ensure that the problems are solved and sustainability is achieved.

Plan to Meet the Competencies

I will engage in a number of interventions to meet the competencies for healthcare workers. Firstly, I will enroll in training and educational programs as a way of achieving the competency of continuous learning and helping others learn. This will help me learn new issues affecting nursing practice and ways of addressing them. I will also work in collaboration with other healthcare providers as a way of meeting the competency of working in interdisciplinary teams. This intervention will help me understand the ways of ensuring that individuals can work in teams to achieve optimum goals in their organization. I will also consider working in a multicultural workplace to obtain the competence to work with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. This will enable me to understand the ways in which holism in healthcare can be promoted through the provision of culturally appropriate nursing care. Therefore, I believe that these interventions will help me meet the competencies for healthcare workers as stated in the IOM report.

Assignment: Pew Health Professional’s Commission Competencies for Healthcare Workers Conclusion

Nurses should have expanded practice as a way of meeting the diverse needs of the American population. However, this demands the need for nurses and other healthcare providers to address the barriers hindering the expansion of their scope of practice. Some of these barriers include high rate of staff turnover and regulatory and policy barriers. Nurses have the responsibility of identifying the ways in which these issues can be addressed. Therefore, I will play an active role in promoting the adoption of personal and group interventions that would result in the expansion of our practice as nurses.
