Title: Assignment: Personal Model of Leadership

Assignment  Personal Model of Leadership

My model of leadership is one that engages the employees since I prefer to involve my followers in the decision-making process actively. I believe that when individuals are involved in making decisions and are allowed to air out their opinions in an organization, they perform their duties more effectively and efficiently. Besides, it is also a way of internally motivating individuals, which result in better achievement of the organizational goals. Drawing decisions from the employees may be useful to the leader as it helps generate new ideas on how to run and lead the organization. In democratic leadership, the leader further encourages the followers to set their professional goals and design individual work plans that guide their practice.

Additionally, my model involves communicating my professional goals and objectives and ideas to my followers and working with them towards achieving and sustaining them. I believe that when a leader communicates his or her vision together, it brings unity and a harmonious working environment. Furthermore, my leadership style involves setting attainable objectives with my followers and planning as a team on how to meet the objectives. The team members are then left to implement the plans with guidance but minimal supervision. Besides, I believe in allowing others to innovate creative ideas on how to execute their duties and come with up solutions. Most importantly, I value teamwork, and I believe in the importance of team building activities that strengthen the team and motivates employees.

Application of Personal Model of Leadership in My Professional Setting

Assignment: Personal Model of Leadership

Nurses should view themselves as leaders, improve their leadership skills, and embrace the health care challenges that they face in their professional practice. In nursing practice, I may apply my model of leadership to lead my colleagues towards achieving better health outcomes for our clients and the overall organizational goals. As a leader, I will involve all nurses regardless of their educational qualifications in making decisions on patient care. For instance, I will engage them in preparing nursing care plans by seeking consensus on the nursing interventions that can be implemented in managing a patient.

The model may also be applied in the preparation and allocation of duties and patients to nurses. This is by enquiring from

nurses on when they would prefer to have their off-days to help lower cases of work-lateness and absconding. Furthermore, nurses perform better in different settings and have different patient interests. For example, some nurses have an interest in working in the maternity department, while others have an interest in medical-surgical nursing. Consequently, as a nurse leader, I will draw opinions from nurses in their areas of interest and use the information in making decisions on the allocation of nurses in different hospital units. Nevertheless, I will decide after reviewing the academic qualifications and professional experience of a nurse to guide in the allocation of duties.

The leadership model may also be applied by encouraging my colleague nurses to come up with creative and better ideas on how to improve health care delivery to patients. For example, nurses can be invited to participate in generating innovative ideas on how infection prevention and control in hospital units. In this case, I will collect all ideas and assess the most sustainable and applicable approach that can improve infection control. I will then engage the nurse who comes up with the best idea in designing a plan, putting the idea into action, and evaluating the plan.

Additionally, the model is applicable in encouraging clinical research on alternative ways to provide nursing care and manage various medical conditions. Encouraging research will motivate nurses to generate scientific knowledge on the management of patients using evidence-based practice. Besides, it will lead to the provision of quality and better nursing care as the nurses will have new knowledge on how to manage patients. For instance, I may encourage nurses to research on ways to manage wounds that do not heal despite daily cleaning and dressing. If new knowledge is generated on the management of non-healing wounds, it will be applied to all patients and shared to other health organizations resulting in better outcomes worldwide.

The personal model can further be applied to inspire nurses to set individual professional goals and work at achieving their goals. I may encourage the nurses to share their career goals and assist them in attaining them in the best way possible. Besides, inspiring nurses to have career goals will motivate them to put more effort into their work resulting in better productivity for the organization. The career goals could be to advance their education, conduct clinical research, or publish a nursing book. I may facilitate this by referring them for scholarship programs, giving them ideas on clinical research areas of interest or by referring them to book publishers.

Comparison of the Personal Model to Other Leadership Styles

The model of leadership compares to the participative leadership style. A leader gets opinions from their followers and uses their views to make informed choices on how to run the organization better (Lussier & Achua, 2015). In a participative style, there is upward and downward communication, whereby the leader seeks employees opinions, and they give their views to their leader (Fischer, Dietz & Antonakis, 2017). Furthermore, suggestions and guidance are used by the leader to guide others. Leaders treasure their employees, value their participation in teamwork, and encourage team- building.

In structural leadership style, the leader uses rewards and punishment based on how members achieve their goals, to bring change to the organization. Leaders start by defining the organizational objectives and outline the roles to be executed. They then select team members, allocate tasks to each member, and lead the team expecting excellent performance from them (Fiaz, Su, & Saqib, 2017). During the execution of the role, the leader makes quick decisions without consulting team members. However, my model involves motivating team members using internal factors such as the achievement of career goals and not through rewards like in structural leadership. In addition, there is team consultation during decision-making, unlike in structural style where leaders make decisions on their own.

Free-thinking leadership style also compares with my leadership model in the way the leader allows the employees to make decisions and execute duties on their own with little supervision (Lussier & Achua, 2015). By minimal supervision, team members feel indebted to their leader and as a result, perform duties to their best. Furthermore, adopting this style enables the members to have an entrepreneurial spirit where every individual has an objective. Similarly, my model involves leaving employees to work with minimal supervision and encouraging them to innovate creative ideas that can help in creating solutions.

Servant leadership brings change to an organization by focusing on the strength of individual members. As a result, team members develop trust in their leader, and this enables them to perform at their best. Moreover, they commit themselves to help their employees in developing competence and improving their work performance. The development of trust among team members enables them to focus on delivering quality services to clients. The servant leadership style shares some similarities with my model, which involves inspiring members to set professional goals, and as a result, trust is developed. Furthermore, it involves committing myself to improve each individual’s performance in their practice.

Transformational leadership involves transforming employees through ideals, hopes, and dreams. The leader gives hope to employees by creating a vision and communicating it to members. The leadership style brings change to the employees through motivation, while change is achieved in the organization by encouraging productivity, communication, and transparency.  In addition, transformational leadership promotes innovation and creativity among employees and upholds values such as integrity, respect, and trust (Lussier & Achua, 2015). Leaders lead the team and also take part in the execution of organizational roles to accomplish the overall goals. Consequently, a transformational leader needs to lead by example by demonstrating a commitment to the vision.

Does My Personal Leadership Model Follow The Lines Of Servant Leadership Or Transformational Leadership?

Transformational leadership involves creating a planned vision that focuses on bringing change in an organization. The leader helps in the growth and development of each into a leader by attending to their individual needs (Fischer, Dietz & Antonakis, 2017). In transformational leadership, employees are fully involved, and a successful change is implemented in an informal and supportive environment.  In addition, transformational leadership encourages innovation and creativity among employees and upholds values such as integrity, respect, and trust (Lussier & Achua, 2015). Lastly, the leaders inspire motivation, encourages teamwork, and offers support and reassurance to members in the organization.

Servant leadership involves improving peoples’ lives, building better institutions, and generally creating a better caring world. Servant leaders prioritize satisfying the needs of their followers and show concern and responsibility to their employees (Fischer, Dietz & Antonakis, 2017). Moreover, they commit themselves to help their employees in developing competence and improving their work performance. This leads to employees gaining knowledge and skills in their profession (Lussier & Achua, 2015). Furthermore, they emphasize on making a positive impact on society by providing services to the community and the nation at large.

Based on the characteristics of transformational and servant leadership, my model follows the line of transformational leadership. My leadership style involves motivating, encouraging the spirit of teamwork, and supporting my followers by creating an enabling environment similarly to transformational leadership. Furthermore, I encourage creativity and innovation of new ideas among individuals in the same way as transformational leaders. Transformational leaders consider each employee by attending to their individual needs. Likewise, my leadership style considers every employee by encouraging them to set their personal, professional goals and sharing them with me so that I can support them where possible.

Assignment: Personal Model of Leadership Conclusion

In conclusion, my leadership model focuses on motivating my followers by giving them the opportunity in decision-making and by encouraging them to come up with innovative ideas on how they can execute their functions. It can be applied in the nursing profession during the allocation of duties, innovating new ideas, and generating new research knowledge on nursing care. The model compares more to democratic and free-reign leadership style but contrasts to autocratic style and follows the line of transformational leadership.
