Begin creating an academic and professional network by identifying which academic and professional connections and resources with which you need to collaborate to succeed in your MSN program and as a practicing nurse.

To Prepare:

  • Consider individuals, departments, teams, and/or resources within Walden University and within your profession that you believe can support your academic and professional success.

Week 1 | Part 1: My Academic and Professional Network

Nursing is among the professions where a student requires an intrinsic desire to pursue. It deals with everyday health challenges. A nurse must be naturally passionate about the profession to deliver care while handling problems beyond other people’s abilities. It is crucial to remember that a person requires support from the school, colleagues, and professionals in various fields. As I interact with colleagues, they will also learn from my perspectives as we share ideas. This linkup enhances inter-professional collaboration, which helps nurses work together with other health practitioners to deliver the highest quality care possible (Bosch & Mansell, 2015). Indeed, many resources and strategies are available to enable a nurse to grow in practice, develop as a professional, and specialize in an area of choice. This template describes the resources and strategies I intend to use to achieve my program objectives.

Name: Fellow MSN Students

Title: RN/MSN/NP Students

Organization: Walden University

Academic or Professional: Academic

Why I selected this individual and/or team and how they will support my success in the MSN program and as a practicing nurse:

Notes: In every profession, a critical part of the success depends on how a person collaborates with colleagues. These are people who share the same vision and would be vital in addressing the challenges experienced in the course and practice. I look forward to using my colleagues as a support system. To a profound extent, our backgrounds and perspectives vary. Due to this variance, there is a high chance of learning new ideas every day as we share our findings and engage in healthy discussions about issues and concepts in the class, communities, and the world.

NETWORK MEMBER 2

Name: Judi Kuric

Title: Program Director

Organization: Walden University

Academic or Professional: Academic

Why I selected this individual and/or team and how they will support my success in the MSN program and as a practicing nurse:

Notes: When deciding where to study, the resources available in terms of support and experience in the profession were my main considerations. Through the faculty’s website and administration documents, a student comes across many academic resources in terms of personnel that can be instrumental to the student’s MSN journey at Walden University. Dr. Kuric is highly experienced in the nursing practice and possesses some experience I would like to get as I advance in age. Since she is a scholar, I look forward to consulting her on academic and personal matters as I read wide from her publications.

NETWORK MEMBER 3

Name: Kate Galatas

Title: MPH

Organization: Associate Director of Communication, CDC

Academic or Professional: Professional

Why I selected this individual and/or team and how they will support my success in the MSN program and as a practicing nurse:

Notes: While pursuing the MSN program, it is crucial to learn from others in the same or different professions as long as they will help me develop as a nurse. They help in this professional growth by showing how and where MSN nurses can utilize their knowledge. I chose Kate because of her experience, and she would be helping on research matters and issues such as emerging illnesses and how I should prepare as a nurse to promote public health.

NETWORK MEMBER 4

ANA Registered Members

Title: RN/MSN/NP

Organization: American Nursing Association

Academic or Professional: Professional

Why I selected this individual and/or team and how they will support my success in the MSN program and as a practicing nurse:

Notes: Whether a person is a student or an acting professional, it is crucial to know how the practice is performing. Nurses also need to come together and approach issues and everyday challenges with a common mindset. Registration in professional bodies such as ANA is beneficial for a growing nurse. It is an opportunity to learn through certifications. In this regard, collaborating with ANA members will offer a huge opportunity to know how the entire industry operates and the benefits of representation and advocacy.

In conclusion, professional growth is multifaceted. A significant proportion of knowledge is gained in classwork, but there is a lot a nurse student learns outside the class. One way to enhance professional growth is to collaborate with academic and professional colleagues and consulting with those experienced in practice. I hope to learn a lot from the selected team, and I am optimistic that I have made the right choice.

A Sample Answer 3 For the Assignment: Assignment: Part 1: Developing an Academic and Professional Network NURS 6003

Title: Assignment: Part 1: Developing an Academic and Professional Network NURS 6003

I have been a Registered Nurse for just over 12 years. I have worked in various fields such as Rehab, Home Health and Dialysis. I have recently joined a team in the Electroconvulsion Therapy department on our Behavioral Health side of the hospital. I have always wanted to give more back to the community I live in. I also have always wanted to set a great example for my children. In 2012, my husband was in a tragic vehicle accident leaving behind a 5-year-old and a 1-year-old. I knew that if I constantly lived a positive life and set regular goals for myself and obtain them in front of my children, they could see that anything you desire and dream for can come true with hard work and perseverance. I completed by Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2018. I have regularly looked into programs to find the best fit for my busy schedule of now 2 growing children with active sports. Being that I am a single mother I find it important that my children can depend on me to be present. I came across Walden University because it is in a neighboring state of mine. I reached out to a colleague of mine from nursing school who attended Walden. She highly recommended the program and stated that she felt prepared and ready with her CNP after completion of the program.

I spoke with the enrollment specialist multiple times before accepting. Every question I had she answered readily with insightful recommendations. The Mission statement at Walden University has resonated with me but the Vision statement is what really had me at the point where I knew this is the right college for me. It states ‘… the contributions of nursing, health, and related sciences will transform the provision of nursing services along the continuum of care and across the human life span to meet the needs of individual’s and local and global communities.” Nursing is changing and evolving all this time. I find it important to stay up to date on new studies, best practices and improved quality of care. Being a nurse does not stop at the facility we work for. It is a profession that encompasses you. Whether its at the grocery store, your kid’s baseball game, or driving along the road. We are nurses and we are always changing and learning to better provide for our community.

  Incorporation of Social Change

It is imperative that nurses maintain health relationships through social networking. Nurses are the front lines of social interactions with patients, patient families and other individuals within our community. It provides outlets to advance career placement and introduces individuals to others means of learning opportunities that they might not have been able to experience without social interaction. As stated in the article by (Schmidt, 2018; University, 2018) “this professional contact may never lead to an actual job, but instead serve as an invaluable resource for knowledge that can be instrumental in advancing the nurse’s career.” As for myself, I have not given much thought as to where this new career might take me but I do know that I will provide excellent care in an ever-changing career through the help at Walden University.

Hi, it is interesting to learn that you have been a registered nurse for 12 years. You joined the Electroconvulsive Therapy Department in your institution. Having a professional team is important since it ensures that one is committed to the healthcare delivery values supported by the institution as well as proving an opportunity for growth. The Walden University mission statement promotes a culture of collaboration and diversity. Also, the institution aims at equipping the graduates to provide the best healthcare services to their patients (Litchfield et al., 2021). However, nurses cannot operate independently and this means that they must collaborate with other professionals and teams. In this case, I would recommend that you join the American Nursing Association because the group allows its members to interact, and advances in their professional practice (Professional networking for nurses, n.d.).

The nursing profession is dynamic and this means that they must constantly update their knowledge to offer the best care to their patients. The scope and clinical guidelines may change from time to time due to the changes in the severity of the diseases, treatment approaches, and quality improvement initiatives. I agree with you that nurses should maintain a healthy relationship through social networking. The interactions and networking allow the nurses to develop clinical experiences to handle patients from different backgrounds with unique illnesses. One must be proactive and determined to join professional organizations and teams to have a successful professional networking experience. The professional contacts may not always lead to the actual jobs; however, could provide a better opportunity for advancements academically and professionally (Wei et al., 2019). For example, one may get the opportunities to engage in research and evidence-based practice which can be difficult to achieve as an individual.

My Goals and University Vision and Mission

Greetings! My name is Kelly Baldenegro and very excited to start this journey alongside you all. After gaining a few years of nursing experience on a general floor, I decided to take my skills to the next level and started working in an intensive care unit (ICU).  There, I discovered my passion for critical care, which eventually led me to challenge myself even more in becoming the title I hold today, COVID ICU travel nurse. Over the last year in a half, I’ve pushed myself to limits I’d never dreamed possible, and did so quite successfully. After many of months contemplating the pros and cons, I decided to take the leap into a leadership role and become an acute care nurse practitioner one day.

Here at Walden University, I quickly realized that my goals to advance my knowledge and discovery in the world of critical care nursing closely aligned with Walden’s Vision, which explains that “knowledge is judged worthy to the degree that it can be applied by its graduates to the immediate solutions of critical societal challenges, thereby advancing the greater global good” (Walden University, 2021). Today, our world is faced with so many critical challenges, and being on the frontline and witnessing some of these challenges firsthand, only inspires me to be more proactive in creating positive change where it is needed.  One of my goals as a registered nurse has always been to advance into leadership with complete confidence, and here at Walden, they have made it their mission to give career professionals the opportunity to transform themselves as scholar-practitioners (Walden University, 2021).

Walden MSN Program Outcomes and Perspectives

The MSN program offers a range of specializations in the most critical areas of nursing,  and because of my passion for critical care, I have chosen to pursue a master level degree in the Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AG-ACNP) program. One of the outcomes for this program is to teach students how to integratively assess, diagnose, plan, implement, and evaluate cost-effective healthcare strategies that reduce health disparities by patient/population advocacy for access to specialist nursing care (Walden University, 2021). Better patient outcomes are ensured with understanding and mastering these strategies.  And for a nurse practitioner who specializes in acute care, having the confidence in the details of treatment can make all the difference with a patient’s course of care.

Networking

One of the primary benefits of robust networking in healthcare is that it allows health professionals to forge connections with colleagues and peers, including those who work in other areas across the spectrum of healthcare settings (“Networking Tips,” 2020). According to Schmidt, social network can be defined as a network of social interactions and personal relationships. By contrast, a professional network is a network of professional interactions and professional relationships (Schmidt, n.d.). Today, networking can be provided through many avenues, such as social media networks, telehealth, electronic databases, etc. Overall, networking is beneficial because it gives providers the opportunity to interact and collaborate with other healthcare professionals to improve patient outcomes, and it allows patients who are outside of a healthcare setting to stay connected with their providers.

Well-spoken when you stated that: “Since I am a returning Walden University student, I believe the mission speak value within itself …”. In my original country, Rwanda, there is a proverb saying that do not tell people that you are good, let your goodness talk about you. I am saying this because most of us who are new at Walden University were informed by friends or co-workers about the school. Therefore, we may be nervous a little bit or have some doubts about Walden University’s vision and mission.

However, now we have Denielia with us, whom I may call a living testimony for the vision and mission of Walden University. She comes back to Walden University because she knows that she will increase her knowledge to become a mental health nurse practitioner because knowledgeable and ethical scholar-practitioners are educating her. I believe that Walden vision statement nursing, health, will transform the provision of nursing services across the human life span to meet the needs of individuals, local and global communities.

I notice that you have been a nurse in the medical field, and you are pursuing to be a mental health nurse practitioner. The experience you have by providing care to patients experiencing medical illness will help you understand better mental illness than a nurse who started as a psych nurse entire his career.  As a mental health nurse, I have seen cases where patients become very psychotic because of low blood sugar or other medical issues because on admission, nobody mentioned that medical issues, and the patient may not be able to talk for himself or herself. Nurses who have experience in the medical field and become mental illness nurses are the best suitable to help patients with mental illness when problems arise.
