Assignment: Leadership Journal Purpose
Assignment Leadership Journal Purpose
Introduction
Leadership is an important component in a work setting and as part of human social life. Today’s competitive world demands leadership skills that can influence followers to achieve specific goals of given organizations. Leaders can use various means to influence followers and lead them to realize the outcomes of a prospect (Rogers, 2014). One of these approaches includes the issue of rule in which leaders exert their power onto the subject to direct them in performing tasks in an organization (Kumar & Khiljee, 2016). Even though leadership is an important pillar in the success of a prospect, it can as well be viewed as the most elusive and yet a puzzling subject that can derail the progress of the organization. In essence, people may admire leaders but may also dislike those who control or act as bosses as they carry out assigned tasks. It is therefore important to explore the hazy and confusing abstraction related to leadership in an organization.
In nursing, leadership practiced by the senior staffs determine the roles undertaken by junior staffs in patient care. More often than ever, the subject on nurse leadership can be riddled with paradoxes of inefficiencies especially when expansions of rule and authority is perceived negatively by followers (Silva et al., 2017). Therefore, nurse leaders need to develop constructive leadership styles that support rational power balance to enhance the achievement of an organization’s objectives as opposed to leadership ruling that evokes sensations of deprivation and insubordination of subjects. The subsequent discussion is a journal that explores thoughts and observation made about leadership during a clinical practicum in week 7. The study will also provide a perception of how a nurse’s leadership style affects the people being ruled. Finally, a reflection will be made on two concepts learned from the “Issue of Rule” as defined by the course guidelines.
Observations and thoughts on Week 7 Activities
In week 7 of clinical placement, concepts about leadership and the issue of rule in the health facility were inculcated. I spent 16 hours this week learning concepts on patient care in the intensive care unit (ICU) of the health facility. The department allows students to know various stages of coma and those that threaten the lives of patients. However, the activities undertaken by nurse leaders and followers are important to give students opportunities to provide diagnosis, conduct nursing procedures and interact with other health providers in the unit. During placement, I engaged with nurse leaders and general practitioners to take care of comatose patients at different levels as graded by the Glasgow Coma Scale. (GCS). The most intrigue part of my experience was the aspect of leadership and rule as exercised by senior nurses. The leaders delegated duties based on the experience of nurses. Specifically, more experienced nurses were assigned patients with a lower GCS considering the fact that these professionals can provide the best care to these patients due to their wealth of experience (Kumar & Khiljee, 2016).
Besides, nurse leaders emulated servant leadership especially by taking part in the resuscitation of critically ill patients. Often,
patients in their vegetative states require optimal care and this demands the support of all care providers including the nurse leaders. These professionals assist in the intubation and resuscitation of unconscious patients to support care during these critical stages of life. Moreover, nurse leaders mediated in conflicts instigated by nurses on issues related to shift hours and duty allocation. I learned how nurse leaders solve dispute without bias to ensure harmony among nurses as they provide care to patients (Rogers, 2014).

How Nurse Leader’s Leadership Style affects the People the Nurse Leads
Placement at the ICU of the care facility provided an important avenue for learning different leadership style practiced by nurse leaders. One of the key styles of leadership experienced was transformational leadership. In this context, the nurse leader in the unit engaged with the followers to influence them in performing nursing procedures in a bid to optimize care to patients (Silva et al., 2017). In this approach, the nurse leader acted as a teacher to educate the followers on the different activities undertaken in the unit. Particularly, this was of utmost benefit to the new staffs and students providing services at the unit.
The nurse leaders also asked for support from advanced registered nurses in the unit to describe the process of nursing care to the junior staffs and nurse students. In this approach, the nurse leaders converted the advanced registered nurses to be leaders in their own right. In other words, the nurse followers were transformed to assume the roles of educators in a bid to instill the culture of hard work to newly recruited nurses and students in the ICU. Through transformational leadership, the nurse leader also acted as a mentor to the juniors in addition to providing high aspirations on how efficiency in the ICU can be achieved (Kumar & Khiljee, 2016). Moreover, the nurse leader was open and social to followers during week 7 practicum in the unit. This approach helped in building the morale of followers and to renew their spirits on providing optimal care to patients.
Reflections on Concepts Learned from the “Issue of Rule”
Leadership is embodied through the social and political framework in a given setting. In essence, leaders also need followers to allow the latter to achieve the goals of a prospect. However, one aspect of leadership that relates to the issue of rule creates a puzzle that can affect the operations of followers in an organization (Silva et al., 2017). Rule implies how a leader exerts authority onto subjects and this affects the perception of the followers. The issue of rule leads to a feeling of coercion whereby subjects are forced to adhere to a specific code of conduct. This instills fear among the followers who have to work as per the stipulated regulations failure to which they face punitive consequences.
The issue of rule also reflects how a leader reacts to others. Often, leaders may exhibit arrogance as they deal with subjects. This kind of ruling demonstrates how a leader serves self-interest in asserting power over the followers (Rogers, 2014). Based on this argument, the issue of rule illustrates how a leader consolidates power to infringe on the rights of subjects and therefore followers tend to be dispersed in achieving the goals of a prospect.
Assignment: Leadership Journal Purpose Conclusion
Leaders are indispensable in preparing subjects to undertake their duties required to achieve the goals of an organization. From the above observation, a good leader is one who can inspire a team to influence their perception about the duties assigned. Working hand-in-hand with the subjects enable leaders to understand performance loopholes which can be sealed to help energize followers in undertaking tasks assigned. This will not only build the enthusiasm of the followers but also enable them to willingly strive to achieve the goals of the organization.
Journaling provides a valuable tool for recording, reflecting on, and reviewing your learning. This approach provides an opportunity for you to \”connect the dots\” and observe the relationships between and among activities, interactions, and outcomes.
Unlike a personal journal of thoughts and feelings, this Leadership Journal is a record of your activities, assessments, and learning related to this academic experience.
Journal entries should include a record of the number of hours spent with your nurse leader each week.
Write a journal entry of 750-1,500 words on the subject of purpose, including the following:
1. Provide observations and thoughts on the activities in Weeks 5-6.
2. Describe how your nurse leader\’s leadership style affects the people the nurse leads. Do staff members express feelings of support and helpfulness? Are there examples of leading rather than dictating? Did the leader say or do things designed to \”build up\” staff or were there missed opportunities?
3. Reflect on at least two things you learned from the \”Issue of Rule\” video
4. View the \”Issue of Headship\” video.

Plagiarism is highly prohibited. Please ensure you are citing your sources correctly using APA 7th edition. All assignments including discussion posts should be formatted in APA with the appropriate spacing, font, margin, and indents. Any papers not well formatted would be returned back to you, hence, I advise you review APA formatting style. I have attached a sample paper in APA format and will also post sample discussion responses in subsequent announcements.
Your initial discussion post should be a minimum of 200 words and response posts should be a minimum of 150 words. Be advised that I grade based on quality and not necessarily the number of words you post. A minimum of TWO references should be used for your initial post. For your response post, you do not need references as personal experiences would count as response posts. If you however cite anything from the literature for your response post, it is required that you cite your reference. You should include a minimum of THREE references for papers in this course. Please note that references should be no more than 5 years old except recommended as a resource for the class. Furthermore, for each discussion board question, you need ONE initial substantive response and TWO substantive responses to either your classmates or your instructor for a total of THREE responses. There are TWO discussion questions each week, hence, you need a total minimum of SIX discussion posts for each week. I usually post a discussion question each week. You could also respond to these as it would count towards your required SIX discussion posts for the week.
I understand this is a lot of information to cover in 5 weeks, however, the Bible says in Philippians 4:13 that we can do all things through Christ that strengthens us. Even in times like this, we are encouraged by God’s word that we have that ability in us to succeed with His strength. I pray that each and every one of you receives strength for this course and life generally as we navigate through this pandemic that is shaking our world today. Relax and enjoy the course!
