Debate continues to rise on the nursing working hours especially those that exceed the recommended 8 hours. Research by Ball et al. (2017) indicates that human beings are more effective when they work at daylight as opposed to night. Furthermore, working for long hours in extended shifts alters the regular circadian rhythm, and this mostly affects those on night shifts. Long working hours cause burnout and fatigue among nursing professionals. The symptoms are evident through muscle weakness, exhaustion as well as decreased cognitive function. Fatigue among nurses also leads to anxiety, lethargy, listlessness, and low concentration.

Workload volumes should reflect the average number of nurses available so that care services are planned based on the nurse-to-patient ratio formula.

For your response post, you do not need references as personal experiences would count as response posts. If you however cite anything from the literature for your response post, it is required that you cite your reference. You should include a minimum of THREE references for papers in this course. Please note that references should be no more than 5 years old except recommended as a resource for the class. Furthermore, for each discussion board question, you need ONE initial substantive response and TWO substantive responses to either your classmates or your instructor for a total of THREE responses. There are TWO discussion questions each week, hence, you need a total minimum of SIX discussion posts for each week. I usually post a discussion question each week.
