Assignment: Implicit Prejudice Essay
Assignment Implicit Prejudice Essay
People are often skeptical about expressing their thoughts on the different contexts of a given situation. We hide our attitude or displeasure about a given premise to avoid embarrassment or wrong judgment about character. The Implicit Association Test (IAT) is vital when it comes to measuring attitudes as well as peoples’ beliefs that they may not be willing to report (Chopik & Giasson, 2017). In this study, an age IAT was conducted to depict my perception about age among the African American population in the United States of America.
Age biases is a practice common in our society. My IAT test determined age factor and how it influences the perception of Americans with regard to attitudes against the Black community. Besides, I took the initiative to examine implicit and explicit attitudes on my perception of aging among African Americans. Based on the test results, I established that the explicit and implicit attitudes indicate varied results with respect to age. My scores reported a preference for the younger people as opposed to the older adults in society. The results reflect the automatic preference of the USA where populations favor the young to the old.
Based on the aforementioned scores, I was not surprised by the automatic preference recorded among the populations of America. In few experiences of my life, I have always preferred youths because they are trendy and adapt quickly to varied changes in their environmental settings (Armenta et al., 2018). In test scores, I was expecting the worst results, but I am glad the outcome provided an overall reflection on the impulse feelings leveraged on the youth as opposed to providing support to the elderly. I also experienced embarrassment as my judgment was based on biases leveled against the old.
Age stereotypes are commonly evident in society today. A study by Wrzus, Egloff, and Riediger (2017) indicates that negative attitudes on age affect the elderly more than the youth and that it is relatively robust. Young people make an implicit judgment about the old indicating the existence of biases directed towards this age group. The elderly populations, on the other hand, regard the degree to which the age perception of the young varies with the implicit attitude. The age IAT offers a platform for people to reflect upon how the elderly judge their age group depending on the perception of others in society. The IAT analysis tool on age depicts the conscious awareness especially when the young impose negative behavioral pattern to the old without assessing the repercussions. The developmental processes and the aspects of social identity affect the attitude of both the young as well as the elderly, which then yield in-group bias. The age IAT results affirm validity because they indicate the highest preference of young people based on their age perception of the elderly. The age IAT tests provide a current understanding of the unconscious roots about thoughts as well as feelings. The outcomes indicate a unique predictive validity about an evaluation of cognition status to explain how conscious have a direct influence on attitude.

The measures of attitude on age as depicted by the IAT test illustrates the complexities around age perceptions. The bias on older adults can be related to the life span developmental stages. At the initial stage human development until adulthood, people
exhibit good health as well as energy to perform given tasks. However, in the late stage of development, the elderly become frail due to the degeneration of the body tissues. The IAT analysis can be used to minimize prejudice leveled against the old as it reflects the development aspects of living things. Stigmatized identities that are developed from the negative stereotypes are baseless since they challenge the gradual process in the growth and decline in cognitive strengths among humans. Other people in the IAT test also hold a belief that cardiovascular health and disability among the elderly contribute to the memory impairment implying that aging is a dynamic process that all human undergo. Prejudice directed to the elderly can only complicate their survival in the universe. However, my level of bias on the elderly is less compared to those of others my locality. I do not agree on the reasons why others instigate stigmatized identities based on an individual’s age considering that health behavior positively correlates with physical functioning.
Therefore, the IAT test on age is a reliable measure of implicit bias since it assesses concepts based on the response of the target audience. It automatically suggests the perception we might have towards other people. In this regard, the preference of the youth to the elderly indicates a life experience ingrained on implicit attitudes but less focused on the evaluation of cognitive abilities. People may be judged as per their contributions in the development of a society, but the response latencies should not be used to impose implicit bias for the elderly (Wrzus, Egloff & Riediger, 2017). Even though the young populations are preferred to their older counterparts, aspects of the gradual changes in growth should be taken into account as a remedy to spontaneous prejudices that complicates the inner peace of the elderly. The age IAT is a valid and reliable tool for the reporting on the minds of clients that could otherwise not mention due to a perception of negative judgment.
Write an essay of 750-1,000 words on your experience with the Implicit Association Test (IAT), located on the Project Implicit website; see the attached document under the assignment tab for further directions. Include the following:
Describe which test you took and your results.
Discuss if your results surprise you. Why or why not?
Interpret the results. Do you think they are valid for you personally?
Reflect on the results of your test and your own implicit bias, briefly explain the causes of prejudicial attitudes and discriminatory behaviors you may have seen in others. Do you see similarities or difference between your bias and others potential bias.
Consider the overall validity of the IAT. Do you think this test is a valid and reliable measure of implicit bias? Use scholarly research to back up your claims in this section.
Use two to four scholarly resources, for this assignment the textbook can count as a scholarly source.

I strongly encourage that you do not wait until the very last minute to complete your assignments. Your assignments in weeks 4 and 5 require early planning as you would need to present a teaching plan and interview a community health provider. I advise you look at the requirements for these assignments at the beginning of the course and plan accordingly. I have posted the YouTube link that explains all the class assignments in detail. It is required that you watch this 32-minute video as the assignments from week 3 through 5 require that you follow the instructions to the letter to succeed. Failure to complete these assignments according to instructions might lead to a zero. After watching the video, please schedule a one-on-one with me to discuss your topic for your project by the second week of class. Use this link to schedule a 15-minute session. Please, call me at the time of your appointment on my number. Please note that I will NOT call you.

If you have any issues that would prevent you from getting your assignments to me by the deadline, please inform me to request a possible extension. Note that working fulltime or overtime is no excuse for late assignments. There is a 5%-point deduction for every day your assignment is late. This only applies to approved extensions. Late assignments will not be accepted.

Plagiarism is highly prohibited. Please ensure you are citing your sources correctly using APA 7th edition. All assignments including discussion posts should be formatted in APA with the appropriate spacing, font, margin, and indents. Any papers not well formatted would be returned back to you, hence, I advise you review APA formatting style. I have attached a sample paper in APA format and will also post sample discussion responses in subsequent announcements.
Your initial discussion post should be a minimum of 200 words and response posts should be a minimum of 150 words. Be advised that I grade based on quality and not necessarily the number of words you post. A minimum of TWO references should be used for your initial post. For your response post, you do not need references as personal experiences would count as response posts. If you however cite anything from the literature for your response post, it is required that you cite your reference. You should include a minimum of THREE references for papers in this course. Please note that references should be no more than 5 years old except recommended as a resource for the class. Furthermore, for each discussion board question, you need ONE initial substantive response and TWO substantive responses to either your classmates or your instructor for a total of THREE responses. There are TWO discussion questions each week, hence, you need a total minimum of SIX discussion posts for each week. I usually post a discussion question each week. You could also respond to these as it would count towards your required SIX discussion posts for the week.
I understand this is a lot of information to cover in 5 weeks, however, the Bible says in Philippians 4:13 that we can do all things through Christ that strengthens us. Even in times like this, we are encouraged by God’s word that we have that ability in us to succeed with His strength. I pray that each and every one of you receives strength for this course and life generally as we navigate through this pandemic that is shaking our world today. Relax and enjoy the course!
