Assignment  Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Essay

Fetal alcohol, syndrome relates to a symptomatology of issues such as growth issues, mental retardation, and abnormal facial features as well as other birth defects. The issue occurs as a result of excessive consumption of alcohol by pregnant mothers. However, drinking during pregnancy is not solely to blame for FAS cases. According to certain studies, only 5% of pregnancies in women who drink excessively result in the condition (Popova et al., 2016). Therefore, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is not solely correlated with excessive alcohol consumption but also high parity, malnutrition, poverty, and smoking, as well as advanced maternal age. Thus, drinking alcohol appears to be causative to the condition but it is not the only factor. Moreover, the issue has psychosocial effects on children with those suffering from it demonstrating impaired social functioning (Roozen et al., 2016). In other words, the FAS causes children to have reduced ability in producing solutions for social dilemmas.

The FAS condition was discovered some 30 years ago leading to its characterization as a major public health issue in the United States. The reason for this characterization relates to the fact that in the 1970s and 1980s, FAS resonated with wider social issues regarding the deleterious effects of alcohol consumption on the American society (Popova et al., 2016). Its effect on perceived child negligence and abuse saw it quickly gain prominence as a social problem in the United States during that era.

The negative relationship in fetal alcohol syndrome is seen in the irreversible mental retardation among the affected. It also causes skeletal system malformations, growth inhibition, complications of central nervous system, and difficulties in learning. The negative conditions with the disorder are seen in aspects such as poor social interaction skills, challenges in problem solving, speech, and limited attention. The strained relationships arise from the consequences of the negative relationship and conditions since the affected will be dependent on others. Their ability to undertake activities of the daily living such as making decisions are affected adversely (Choate & Badry, 2019).  The negative relationship is evidenced by the challenges experienced by the affected. They face stigmatization and social isolation in their communities.

They are also perceived as lazy, socially inept, and immature (Corrigan et al., 2019. Despite these stereotypes, healthcare practice has focused mainly on considering the diverse cultural needs of those affected by the disorder in the delivery of the care they need,

forming a positive relationship in the disease. There negative and strained relationship is seen when the affected show hyperactive behaviors as well as experience health inequalities at the same time. There is a negative association between cultural and behavioral factors such as binge drinking of alcohol and dietary habits and fetal alcohol syndrome. This relationship creates a negative strain relationship in the disease. Therefore, the above connections help me understand the factors that contribute to the disease. It will also help me to understand the health and social effects of the disease on the affected and ways in which it can be prevented. Through it, my understanding of the topic will be enhanced.

Fetal Alcoholic Symptom produced an important effect on the cultures of various communities in the United States. Depending on the ethnicity of the society in question, social inequalities exists. Given the limitations that people exposed to FAS suffer from, it becomes difficult for them to have social parity with their peers who may be normal (Wozniak et al., 2017). The presence of such inequality disadvantages them from enjoying equal employment opportunities as their peers. As a consequence, an existence of a negative impact in the economic ecosystem exists.Assignment  Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Essay

Moreover, cultural biases also manifest in adults diagnosed with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. The failure of an individual to reach age-appropriate communication skills and socialization leads to impaired and maladaptive social functioning (Roozen et al., 2017). As a result, such individuals are alienated by the society, which makes them to suffer fear and shame. These leads to a negative relationship in the society as then stigma and blame become prevalent.

These cultural beliefs and biases are important as they provide a sociological perspective of the life of adults diagnosed with FAS. Through the illumination of the two concepts, I have been able to understand that the society mistreats these individuals not because of their limitations but because of the sins committ3ed by their parents. In other words, the stigma and blames apportioned to the FAS population occurs due to a lack of understanding.

Social Roles

According to the concept map, FAS leads to physical defects, problem functioning, cognitive disabilities, as well as coping with daily functions, which result in social roles. These further lead to strained relationships between the FAS and their parent as well as the society. The maladaptive and impaired social functioning revealed by the concept map makes Fetal Alcohol Syndrome individuals to demonstrate anti-social behaviors such as promiscuity, improper touching, and inappropriate exposure, and inappropriate sexual behaviors (Aspler, Zizzo, Di Pietro, & Racine, 2018). Therefore, the social roles caused by FAS may influence the existence of not only immorality but sexual harassment in the society.

Thus, the above social roles associated with FAS play an important role in propagating societal decadence. The roles reveal that the increased cases of sexual harassment in terms of inappropriate touch and moral decadence such as promiscuity may not be due to the desire for sexual gratification but because of fetal alcohol syndrome. Therefore, the association between FAS and its social roles illuminate the causes of the prevalence of the above mentioned societal behaviors.

Social Inequalities

Teenagers and adults diagnosed with FAS have been demonstrated to have a 95% during their lifetime to suffer from mental health issues. The concept map identifies hyperactivity and inattention span as the social inequities in FAS conditions. This is consistent with the assertion that such individuals may suffer concomitant behavioral, psychiatric and emotional problems (Badry & Choate, 2015). The psychiatric issues such as ADHD, suicide, addiction, substance use and depression afflict this population. Thus, they have greater instances of trouble as concerns the law and also strained familial relationships (Wozniack et al., 2017). Therefore, the societal inequalities suffered by these individuals produce negative and strained relationships.

The social roles identified in the concept map provide a clear view of the sociological perspective related to FAS. That adults and teenagers diagnosed with FAS may become criminals is due to a failure of the social and health system of the society. For the condition to reach such an extent, it is clear that these individuals did not receive appropriate interventions, support services, and diagnosis when they were young, which would have been maintained throughout their lives. Therefore, the social connection between the roles of these individuals and the FAS conditions is due to societal failure.

Impact of Social Change

The fetal alcohol syndrome challenges the notion that some of the psychiatric and social issues such as depression, anxiety, and inappropriate touch are caused by individual behaviors. For a long time, it has been thought that predisposing factors such as substance abuse, poverty, and traumatic experiences have led to the existence of such issues (McCormick, 2016). However, an analysis of the fetal alcoholic syndrome reveals that it greatly contributes to the existence of such issues. The impaired social and cognitive development act as major predisposing factors for such societal decadence if it is not the only factor.

Therefore, the existence of the fetal alcoholic syndrome and its diagnosis in adult will provide important ammunition in the fight against some of the mental, social, and cognitive challenges that affect the society. The fact that the conditions exist is directly correlated to the fact that childhood diagnosis was not done while improper interventions and poor support services were used. Therefore, its prevalence will compel the authorities to place measures in place so as to reduce instances of societal decay caused by the fetal alcoholic syndrome (Cook & Walsh, 2015). Specifically, individuals suspected to be having the condition hence predisposed to depression will be identified, diagnosed and then placed in cognitive behavioral therapy programs. Therefore, fetal alcohol syndrome may facilitate change concerning the manner in which anti-social behaviors and maladaptive cognitive functions are handled by the society.

Lopes Write Policy

For assignments that need to be submitted to Lopes Write, please be sure you have received your report and Similarity Index (SI) percentage BEFORE you do a “final submit” to me.

Plagiarism is highly prohibited. Please ensure you are citing your sources correctly using APA 7th edition. All assignments including discussion posts should be formatted in APA with the appropriate spacing, font, margin, and indents. Any papers not well formatted would be returned back to you, hence, I advise you review APA formatting style. I have attached a sample paper in APA format and will also post sample discussion responses in subsequent announcements.

Your initial discussion post should be a minimum of 200 words and response posts should be a minimum of 150 words. Be advised that I grade based on quality and not necessarily the number of words you post. A minimum of TWO references should be used for your initial post. For your response post, you do not need references as personal experiences would count as response posts. If you however cite anything from the literature for your response post, it is required that you cite your reference. You should include a minimum of THREE references for papers in this course. Please note that references should be no more than 5 years old except recommended as a resource for the class. Furthermore, for each discussion board question, you need ONE initial substantive response and TWO substantive responses to either your classmates or your instructor for a total of THREE responses. There are TWO discussion questions each week, hence, you need a total minimum of SIX discussion posts for each week. I usually post a discussion question each week. You could also respond to these as it would count towards your required SIX discussion posts for the week.

I understand this is a lot of information to cover in 5 weeks, however, the Bible says in Philippians 4:13 that we can do all things through Christ that strengthens us. Even in times like this, we are encouraged by God’s word that we have that ability in us to succeed with His strength. I pray that each and every one of you receives strength for this course and life generally as we navigate through this pandemic that is shaking our world today. Relax and enjoy the course!
