Nursing theories play an important role in nursing practice. They guide the models of care that are utilized to achieve the set goals in a health care organization. The theory of self-care by Dorothea Orem is one of the theories that have a significant influence on my future practice as a nurse specialist in nursing education. Orem’s theory of self-care deficit comprises of three theories that include the theory of self-care deficit, self-care, and nursing systems (Malekzadeh, Amouzeshi & Mazlom, 2018). According to the theory, individuals engage in self-care activities to maintain and meet their health needs. However, the inability to perform the self-care abilities result in dependence, hence, the need for care. Nurses are important in facilitating self-care of the patients by ensuring that their self-care requisites, health deviation, and developmental needs are met. The critical role that Orem’s theory plays in health also implies that it can be utilized in nursing education to promote quality and excellence in healthcare (Peate & Wild, 2017). Therefore, this research paper explores the manner in which the theory of self-care by Orem guides my practice as an advanced practice nurse educator.

The self-care theory by Dorothea Orem provides a framework for my specialized practice in a number of ways. Firstly, the theory provides nurse educators with the basis in which they can question their practice. The theory of self-care consists of concepts such as patient, health, and environment that guide the provision of nursing care. These concepts are often used as the basis of decisions that are made in healthcare. Therefore, nurses can use performance indicators related to these concepts to question or challenge existing organizational processes that influence the provision of care (Ackley et al., 2019). The theory also provides advanced practice nurses specializing in nursing education with a framework for providing continence care. The three theories in the model, which include nursing systems, self-care, and self-care deficits, provide nurse educators with logical frameworks of assessing, determining the needed interventions, and delivering optimum care to the patients. They also utilize the models in imparting the needed knowledge in nursing practice to the nursing students and other nurses in practice.

Orem’s theory also provides nurse educators with the platforms to apply nursing practice in guiding nursing roles in class and clinical settings. Accordingly, it acts as a source of theoretical knowledge and practice that keeps them and those they lead to practice as nurses, direct care, and create common basis for discussing nursing care (Peate & Wild, 2017). For instance, nurse educators can use the model to relate the various healthcare needs with patient’s inability to meet their universal requisites of self-care. Consequently, it makes it evident that the theory of self-care provides advanced practice nurses with framework that can be used in their practice.

Perspectives of Orem’s Theory and Application to my Specialized Role

The focus of Orem’s theory of self-care is on two aspects that include nursing concerns and nursing goals. According to it, nursing concerns encompass the individual needs that nurses should provide to promote health, recovery, and wellbeing. A nursing goal refers to the focus of nursing care, which is to overcome the limitations facing the patients. The theory also emphasizes on the utilization of nursing concepts in the provision of care. The concepts include patient, health, nursing, and environment. According to her, a patient needs care to meet his or her self-care requisites. The patient is also a willing being who can take responsibility for their health. Nursing on the other hand is perceived to be the use of nurse-directed actions to promote independence. The provision of this care takes into consideration the influence of internal and external environment on health. Furthermore, the model perceives health to be a state of wellbeing where one can meet their self-car needs with minimal or no support from the nurse. These perspectives are important for my future role because they provide a framework that can be used in promoting independence among learners. It also shows that learners have the willingness to achieve their goals if the desired support is provided to them (Grove, Gray & Burns, 2014). Therefore, I will utilize these perspectives to promote empowerment and independence in those I teach and provide my care.

The theory of self-care provides a framework for handling situations in the real world. Firstly, it guides the approach to assessing not only the needs of the patients but also the learners’. According to the theory, nursing assessment should focus on identifying and

The theory can be used in generating hypotheses in research. The hypotheses can then be tested through quantitative research to determine the existence of cause-effect relationship among variables. The theory also provides concepts that are used to guide research. Concepts such as patient, environment, and health are used to guide the undertaking of both qualitative and quantitative researches (Peate & Wild, 2017).

How it Provides Framework for Predicting or Directing Nursing Interventions

As shown earlier, the model directs nursing interventions. The assessment data is used to develop plans, implement, monitor, and evaluate the effectiveness of the adopted interventions. The model also allows for the prediction of the future nursing needs. In this case, promotion of a patient’s ability to meet their self-care needs imply that the anticipated rate of recovery will be enhanced. There is also the use of the model to determine the current and future effectiveness of the adopted interventions, hence, its significance in nursing practice and education (Ackley et al., 2019).

Your initial discussion post should be a minimum of 200 words and response posts should be a minimum of 150 words. Be advised that I grade based on quality and not necessarily the number of words you post. A minimum of TWO references should be used for your initial post. For your response post, you do not need references as personal experiences would count as response posts. If you however cite anything from the literature for your response post, it is required that you cite your reference. You should include a minimum of THREE references for papers in this course. Please note that references should be no more than 5 years old except recommended as a resource for the class. Furthermore, for each discussion board question, you need ONE initial substantive response and TWO substantive responses to either your classmates or your instructor for a total of THREE responses. There are TWO discussion questions each week, hence, you need a total minimum of SIX discussion posts for each week. I usually post a discussion question each week. You could also respond to these as it would count towards your required SIX discussion posts for the week.
