Assignment Cultural Sensitivity: Risk Factors Essay

Risk factors refer to the attributes, exposure or characteristics of a person, which increase the likelihood of that individual developing a certain illness or disease (Yuan et al., 2017). For instance, the risk factors of a health complication such as cancer include family history of cancer, age, tobacco use, being exposed to certain chemicals and radiations, certain viral and bacterial infections and specific genetic changes among others. Among Chinese Americans, cancer and cardiovascular diseases are the main health complications faced by this community as a result of high systolic blood pressure and dietary risks (Lewington et al., 2016). The Chinese Americans are known to be at high risk of developing cancers of the esophagus, nasopharynx, liver, cervix, and stomach (Torre et al., 2016). There are, however, other risk factors in the Chinese American culture such as tuberculosis, which is environmental but its prevalence has reduced in the recent years due to the TB vaccine, lactose intolerance which is genetic and as a result of lifestyle choices, and diabetes which is also genetic and as a result of lifestyle choices.

The main nursing strategies that can be employed to provide sufficient healthcare and prevent occurrence of the above diseases among the Chinese American culture entail the promotion of dietary education, enhancement of public awareness on the risk factors and how to avoid them and lastly, encouragement of physical exercises among the members of this culture (In Dahlin, In Sutermaster, American Nurses Association, & Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association, 2014). Most Chinese people believe in the theory of yang and yin and consume food in accordance with this theory when they fall ill. For example, they would avoid drinking or eating anything with yin qualities such as vegetables, salad, cold meat or cold drinks. They would otherwise eat beef, fried foods, and chicken which put them at high risk of cardiovascular diseases.

deprives them of a special diet which is essential for emotional and physical harmony (Xutian, Tai, Yuan, & World Scientific, 2015). It is thus very crucial for the nurse to educate the members of this community about the risk factors of certain predominant diseases which are associated with high salt and fat intake. Further, the nurse must also inform them of the importance of physical exercise as a preventive measure of several health complications and for general well being.

Health promotion interventions such as smoking cessation programs, educational programs on the prevention of diseases such as dietary control and promoting physical activity can be implemented among members of the Chinese American community to enhance a healthy living (Xutian, Tai, Yuan, & World Scientific, 2015). With regard to dietary control, the nurse can help the members of this community select foods which are still within the yin and yang theory, but only the once with desired nutritional value to help balance both physical and emotional harmony (Xu et al., 2008). In the implementation of the other interventions, the nurse must work with individual clients to help in the assessment of the illness behavior and biological variation in relation to their cultural beliefs and practices to be able to provide effective and individualized care.
