Assignment 2: Assessing and Changing Health Behaviors

Assignment 2: Assessing and Changing Health Behaviors

This assignment is based on Module 2: Health Behaviors and is designed to help you think about your health-related behaviors, your reasons for doing or not doing those behaviors, and how to change personal health behaviors. The first part of the assignment is to identify behaviors that you purposely do (e.g., drink at least 8 glasses of water per day) or do not do (e.g., avoid smoking) in an effort to maintain or improve your physical health and/or to prevent illness, as well as to consider your rationale for engaging in or avoiding these behaviors. The second part of this assignment is to select a new behavior you would like to incorporate into your health routine and think about the behavior within the context of the Health Belief Model of health-behavior change. The third part of this assignment is to identify potential barriers to engaging in the new behavior and decide what you will do when you encounter those barriers. Throughout the assignment, focus on behaviors and rationales related to your physical health. Submit your completed sheet to Blackboard by its due date. Part I. Identify three distinct health behaviors you engage in or avoid and write one behavior in each of the three boxes on the left side of the table below. In the corresponding three boxes on the right side of the table, write 1-2 sentences describing your three distinct rationales for engaging in or avoiding each behavior (e.g., “I avoid smoking because smoking can cause lung cancer.”; do not use this smoking example). Health Behavior 1. 2. 3. My Rationale for Doing/Not Doing This Behavior Part II. First, in a few sentences of your own words, describe the components of the Health Belief Model of health-behavior change, discussed in Topic: Health Behaviors from Week 2 and in your textbook, and explain how useful it is in predicting and changing health behaviors. Cite course materials to support your definitions, arguments, or other ideas. Next, use the Health Belief Model to understand how you can enact a new health behavior. Identify a new physical behavior you would like to add to your health routine. Please write the new behavior on the line below and then complete the boxes on the right side of the table, writing 1-2 sentences for each. New Health Behavior: __________________________________________________________ Perceived Health Threat (of NOT adding this behavior): Perceived Threat Reduction (if you DO add this behavior): Part III. For the new health behavior described in Part II, identify two potential barriers to engaging in that behavior (e.g., “My coworkers smoke on their breaks every day and I usually join them.”); write these barriers in the boxes on the left side of the table below. In the corresponding boxes on the right side of the table, list how you will address these barriers. Structure your counteraction in the form of implementation intentions (e.g., “IF I see my coworkers leaving to smoke on their break, THEN I will drink one glass of water.”), discussed in Module 2 and in your textbook. Potential Barrier 1. 2. How I will Counteract This Barrier
