Nurses strive to provide the best possible care to diverse clients under consistently changing conditions. From the medications administered to the type of dressing used to heal a wound, nurses apply procedures that have been tested through research and deemed appropriate according to evidence-based standards of practice. Through foundational knowledge related to research methods, translation of research data is used to improve nursing practice and, ultimately, patient outcomes. Therefore, nurses must become familiar with the specific language of scientific research and the research process. As health care professionals, nurses seek to provide their patients with the best possible health care. To determine which approaches to care result in the best possible care, the effectiveness of each approach specific to a chosen population must be investigated. The pursuit of knowledge is the basis for research. Researchers seek to find answers to various scientific questions, but there are the boundaries associated with the pursuit of knowledge (Helbig, 2018).
I work in a pulmonary office. We use the latest research to provide care with diagnosing our patients with COPD or Asthma. Using the latest research and guidelines is important.

Great take on why research is so important. I could not agree more! When you think about it research and evidenced based practices are key in all areas of nursing practice whether it is diagnosing a patient with asthma/COPD or determining best practices on prescriptions to help give the patients the best treatment for their newly diagnosed asthma. I think the lungs are so interesting and it is even more important to pay close attention to the newest treatments seeing as there are many people experiencing different symptoms post covid.
Applying evidence-based practice is very important when it comes to healthcare. Because it includes the usage of the latest technologies, which often happens in my workplace. These provide better service to patients and prevent or eliminate medical errors in patients by the documentation of health information. By using the latest technology in my workplace, you can enhance clinical care and also by giving information about new clinical care. When there are patients with different health problems, technologies make taking care of them and assessing them a lot easier. It additionally, helps. nurses in my workplace, including other healthcare workers, make the right decision in the critical situation of patients in the health care settings. Further down, technology helps our organization improve the quality of care through evidence-based practice to enhance professionalism in nursing and helps avoid many of us working avoid dangerous situations.
Any nurse who follows a code of conduct inpatient care should apply evidence-based practice into their life. Better outcomes through evidence-based practice could enhance a nursing profession or an organization.

Technology is such an integral part of our world and something we need to use basically in any profession in today’s world. The charting system we use in the clinics and the hospitals rely on technology to be able to keep record of patient’s medical history and visit encounters. With this technology, we are able to utilize it for data research in both the quantitative and qualitative types. Thank you for sharing this topic.

Great response. I like your statement regarding how the use of evidence based practice (EBP) encourages the use of technology. I also see this in my workplace, mostly in the form of electronic documentation and I can say that it makes a significant difference. Documenting electronically provides a great way of collecting information, efficient and accurate documentation, and easy transfer of information to the next healthcare provider in regards to collaborative care/transfer of healthcare facilities. Besides this, even the use of electronic blood pressure readers are impressive as it aids in decreasing the occurrence of misreading’s by nurses. With the constant advancements and the development of more and more healthcare related technology, I only see an increase in the use of technology in healthcare which is great.

I work in a long-term acute care hospital, and I use to work long-term care at a nursing home. These are two very different aspects of nursing but very important work, nurses have to be alert and vigilant when it comes to patients and advocate for patients. Research is needed to take care of the patients and make decisions about care; it helps with what a nurse plan on doing and what they can do. When I was working in the nursing home our biggest concerns were falls, pressure ulcers, weight loss relate to nutrition intake, EBP was/can be applied by the proven fact that turning patients every two hours and providing frequent incontinence care can help prevent skin breakdown/pressure ulcers. Research has shown that frequent rounding, toileting, and 5 Ps (potty, pain, possessions, etc) can help prevent falls. It shows that falls happen during shift change frequently, so my nursing home in forced bedside report and walking rounds, (which help with multiply things for patients) we also used the falling star program (there was a picture of a falling star on the room door and on the patient wrist band, this way everybody knew the patient). These things being applied were the result of EBP and research from our quality control team at work. Working at the hospital LTACH we focused more on infections. EBP and research are used on patients with foleys and central lines for example preventing CAUTIs and CLASBIs. We do Chlorhexidine wipes on all new admits and on foleys twice a day, dressings for lines are changed weekly. Patients are assessed daily for both to see if it is needed to keep, this is due to research showing that having either on can lead to infection. I think nurses will always use EBP/research in the care they give if it’s Tylenol for s fever or sitting a patient up in bed to help them breathe.

Hi Victoria! Very good examples of how you use evidence-based practice at work. I have also worked in long term care. The care we provided in that wetting is similar to that in the hospital. Turning patients, hourly rounds, fall assessments, skin assessments, foley catheter care, and PICC line care is done every shift. These are all ways to decrease infection and falls!
The EBPs that you discussed are one of the major quality initiatives many hospitals and nursing homes have implemented to improve quality and safety of patient care. Purposeful rounding otherwise known as hourly rounding had huge impact on patient safety. The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) regards . hourly rounding as the best way to reduce call lights and fall injuries, and increase both quality of care and patient satisfaction (Daniels J. F, 2016)Studies have shown again and again that having staff members rounding on patients to address their needs (5 Ps – pain , potty, position , proximity , pump ) and checking their environment including the status of their bed alarm/chair alarm has a significant impact on fall reduction , pressure ulcer prevention and patient experience . Purposeful rounding is practiced in my unit as well and our fall data showed significant improvement so did the HCHAP scores for patient experience. It looks the facility that you work has many evidence based best practices in place to improve patient outcome. Thank you for sharing .
