Sample Answer for NURS 6053 Personal Leadership Philosophies Essay Included After Question

Many of us can think of leaders we have come to admire, be they historical figures, pillars of the industry we work in, or leaders we know personally. The leadership of individuals such as Abraham Lincoln and Margaret Thatcher has been studied and discussed repeatedly. However, you may have interacted with leaders you feel demonstrated equally competent leadership without ever having a book written about their approaches.

What makes great leaders great? Every leader is different, of course, but one area of commonality is the leadership philosophy that great leaders develop and practice. A leadership philosophy is basically an attitude held by leaders that acts as a guiding principle for their behavior. While formal theories on leadership continue to evolve over time, great leaders seem to adhere to an overarching philosophy that steers their actions.

What is your leadership philosophy? In this Assignment, you will explore what guides your own leadership.

Title: NURS 6053 Personal Leadership Philosophies Essay

These are unique principles that every person in leadership should have and present to their team to follow. These philosophies are critical since they can help guide one through hard moments by making significant and small decisions since these philosophers help act as unwritten policies once shared in the team (Andrews, 2016). Several people struggle to understand the type and kind of leaders they are as well as their leadership identity. Therefore, this writing piece will help explore and discover my philosophies in leadership by having a deep reflection on my core values, mission statement, and Clifton strengths assessments, and creating a plan of development to help accomplish my vision.

Core Values

Core values help to dictate the principles of leadership behavior. One of the most outstanding qualities nurses need to have is the quality of care. This is what unites nurses and patients and transforms the nursing profession. Thus, caring is deemed a core value for the nurses who are practicing it holistically. It helps in promoting health and healing among patients. Nonetheless, nurse leaders must have caring quality because caring is a quality that needs to be applied to the patient and the team members who are continually helping to achieve the patient goals (Laird-Magee, Gayle & Preiss, 2015).

Another core value that is part of me is diversity. I have been practicing this value every day in my life, both at home and at work. This is because diversity helps to enhance individual creativity and provide insights into the culture. It helps to remind me every moment that in nursing, it’s not a matter of one size fits it all. Awareness of diversity is critical in the nursing profession since it helps to acknowledge and appreciate differences in individual’s attitudes, thoughts, beliefs, and priorities in individuals’ health-seeking behaviors in the population (Dyess, Prestia & Smith, 2015).

Awareness of diversity is critical in the nursing profession since it helps nurses acknowledge and appreciate the existence of differences in the community. This helps to reflect the nursing profession’s contract with society and the sole responsibility nurses have to act per the robust code of ethics that guides the nursing profession. This helps the nurses be aware of their attitudes, thoughts, priorities, and beliefs while providing care to individual patients, their families, and the entire community (Zambrano, 2019). Several pieces of training are ongoing that helps to ensure critical patient quality service care is provided. It is important to note that essential healthcare issues are increasing, such as healthcare service costs, complexities of regulations, shortages of labor in hospitals, comorbidities associated with old age, and thoughts in solving these problems. In doing so, leaders must be able to develop new consciousness in helping them approach and solve healthcare problems (Speranza & Pierce, 2019).

Vision/Mission Statement

I had to reflect and do inner searching on myself for my core purpose to help in identifying my vision and mission as a professional nurse. My mission as a nurse in the profession is to devote my entire life to providing quality and compassionate health care services to every patient, family, and community (Zambrano, 2019). This will be provided through excellence in good leadership, education, and professional practice. I appreciate the differences among people of all ethnicities and backgrounds, celebrate diverse perspectives, and embrace the differences between ideas. As an individual, I am thoroughly committed to providing the highest quality care that is individualized and educates to promote the health of the individuals and the entire society.

Clifton Strengths Assessment Results

My top themes from the Clifton strength assessment result can be summarized into: deliberative, analytical, relator, individualization, and intellection. The theme of deliberative informs me that I am a person who is serious and private and likes careful and deep thinking. Besides, it indicates that I let other people begin a conversation, and I listen to them, observe and keep thoughts to myself (Zambrano, 2019).

Behaviors to Strengthen

I am a person who is known to be quiet among many people. Because of this, people have often mistaken my quietness for being “shy.” And unable to initiate interactions. However, my siblings do describe me accurately as being a reserved person. Besides, my reservation has been able to make limit my list of friends. As a social being, this has worked against me in several situations, both at home and hospital setting. Secondly, I am known to be “hot-tempered” by both colleagues and family members. This has made people develop fear and choose what they want to discuss with me. Because of this character, only a few people have been able to understand me. Therefore, these two behaviors are in my list of actions that need to be changed and strengthened to help cope with patients’ and colleagues’ diverse environment (Speranza & Pierce, 2019).

Development Plan

This character of being “reserved” has made people underrate me. Therefore, I would like to improve this behavior and find ways to enable other people in my environment to understand me better. To achieve my vision and mission in the nursing profession, I will be forced to practice modern nursing evidence-based practice. I need to acknowledge that nursing goes beyond the patient, and the family members are equally affected by the patient illness. Therefore, I need to plan for diverse care that will be holistic. For example, family members need to be incorporated into care to ensure that their anxiety is alleviated.

Title: NURS 6053 Personal Leadership Philosophies Essay

Introduction

Leadership qualities are contributors to the success of healthcare organization and one who possesses them promotes the core of healthcare. This relates with Indeed (2023) defining leadership in health care as involvement in influencing and motivating medical personnel to contribute to the success and effectiveness of medicine, patient care, and health care practices. In achieving this, the leader needs to be strategic, ideated, futuristic, a relator, an achiever and many more , all for the purpose of effectiveness. These themes were revealed of me having assessed myself using Don Clifton’s Strengths Insight Guide. I will briefly discuss the result in this write-up, noting a few values and characteristics that need strengthening.

My strength, Core values and areas that needs strengthening

My StrengthsFinder assessment revealed my top 5 strengths as Strategic, Ideation, relator, achiever and futuristic.

Being strategic requires creativity in finding alternative ways to proceed. I tend to identify goals, carefully devise ways of reaching the goals choosing the best approach. Though sometimes to find these alternative ways will require ideation which entails listening to other people’s ideas. Being in a team, I can rightly spot patterns and issues in suggestions/practices and adopt best methods with a view to gaining productivity.  Although, an idea may not be taken for its face value until I have carefully analyzed it. More so, having good relational skill is important especially if one hopes to get and keep people. My relationship with people is usually based on the trust they have in me. Being candid and plain endears me to people and vice versa.

Also, I have an inclination to strengthening the bond between people that I know, or those that I will never meet and this is because I pride myself in my achievements. This particular goal has a special meaning to me making me exert energy into causing people to realize they are valued. By this, my relational skill is strengthened as people naturally will be open to relating with me and which gives me the opportunity to be an adviser to many. This, however, leads me to working myself tirelessly so as to be gainfully accomplished in whatever I have set to do.

The final theme result reflects my futurism. This has to do with target setting(Clifton, 2021). A visualization of the nearest or long term achievement motivates me to work towards its actualization. It is this futurism that makes for my proper planning which mostly yields good result. I sometimes push myself all in a bid make up for my shortcomings which I think affect or may affect my goals.

Nonetheless, there are core values, characteristics and strengths that need to be strengthened for a overall better performance. Though I tend to relate with people, it is based on my ascertaining that they possess some qualities. This may be a limitation to effectively functioning as a leader and as such I will need to work on relating also with individuals who may not possess some qualities I would have liked. There is also the need to be more proactive since doing so can afford me the opportunity to plan ahead more thereby getting higher chances of productivity. Ingenuity and excellence are two cores I will need to strengthen. There is a progressive advancement on the field which will need me to study more to achieve excellence based on the recent trend of practice.

In conclusion, Health care leaders do more than just organizing; they motivate employees to achieve their potentials for the benefit of patients, colleagues, and the medical field.  I really enjoyed completing the assessment exercise, I have come to appreciate how I act the way I do and it has exposed me to the skills in need to develop to be more effective as a leader.

I enjoyed reading your post. Communication is a vital part of health care. Communication can make someone gain or lose trust. We communicate with our patients, doctors, and nursing assistants; most importantly, the team communicates with each other. Without clear communication, there are gaps and delay in care. There are so many kinds of communication, like therapeutic communication between the nurse and the patient and clear and concise communication between the nursing personnel when giving bedside reports, and they are all essential.

Communication goes hand in hand with charisma; when you have effective communication, you can capture the audience and transmit your tone and your ideas effortlessly. This is a blessing since many people need to be proficient in communication. You can be an educator and give lectures or precept new students. You can even be a champion in your unit and present ideas.

Research has shown that effective communication can impact patient outcomes and recovery (Kwame & Petrucka, 2021). Research also shows that effective communication is essential in reporting patients’ plans of care and critical data (Kwame & Petrucka, 2021).

An important tip in communication is always to pay attention to your audience and engage them (StrengthsFinder 2.0 from Gallup: Discover your Cliftonstrengths 2021). If you are communicating with a patient, you need to pay attention to their body language; if they are nodding and not asking questions, you should ask a question to assess their understanding. You can also assess their body language, which can show frustration or discomfort. Another tip is to pay attention to your words and use them wisely since they significantly impact the patient (StrengthsFinder 2.0 from Gallup: Discover your Cliftonstrengths 2021). Communicating with a doctor will sound different than communicating with a patient; watching your tone and medical terminology will impact their understanding. This is a great strength; communication is not one of my strengths.

The other very important one is Achiever. As an achiever, you have to make sure that you give yourself credit and slow down and realize your success (StrengthsFinder 2.0 from Gallup: Discover your Cliftonstrengths 2021). You can challenge that by continuing your education or taking up new roles. It would be best to pair up with people who are also achievers to ensure you do not do all the work by yourself and get frustrated (StrengthsFinder 2.0 from Gallup: Discover your Cliftonstrengths 2021). Communication and achiever are great strengths to have.

Effective leadership styles and skills demonstrated by nurses and nurse leaders develop a powerful influence on how health care provider’s work. Studies show that organizations with effective leadership styles have better relationships, reduced staff turnover, limited conflicts and enhanced staff involvement in work and better use of resources. As leaders, nurses must possess core values based on their personal leadership philosophy that mirrors what they believe are characteristics of effective leadership. Leadership philosophies provide guidance in situations where nurses have to make difficult decisions (Asamani et al., 2016). The personal leadership philosophies in this article will address my core values, mission statement and the findings from the Clifton Strengths Assessment. The article will present a plan on enhancing my behaviors and achieve personal vision.

Personal Philosophy & Description of Core Values

Personal leadership philosophy guides the leader’s conduct and their reactions to others and immediate situations. Imperatively, my leadership philosophy is utilizing positive core values in developing expectations for those I serve while modeling transformational leadership behavior which leads to the attainment of a set vision and corresponds to the overall attainment of common purpose and goals.

A leader’s core values are internal characteristics based on ethical principles that guide leadership conduct. According to Speranza and Pierce (2019), core values are tied to the moral guidance of an individual which regulates and directs the decisions that one makes. Individuals with robust internal moral values have an increased tendency of making decisions that mirrors their internalized ethical values or perspective and cannot bend them to match others if they do not match. My core values are the moral principles that are expected of an effective leader, and they include authenticity and responsibility, open-mindedness and transparency, integrity and respect, developing trusting relationships, and dependability.

Leaders need to demonstrate genuine trust in their actions to be authentic and be responsible by showing that they are dependable, fulfill their promises, and possess a sense of loyalty. Integrity implies that a leader is truthful and consistent based on their honest conduct. Effective leader-subordinate relationship requires a leader to show respect to others and dependability means that one is reliable. Based on these core values, leaders should build trusting relationship, possess high levels of integrity, and model dependability to be authentic. Authentic leadership allows one to attain influence over subordinates and in their workplace (Speranza & Pierce, 2019). Each leader should endeavor to develop influence which relies on their characteristics or core values. Emotional intelligence that enables a leader to show empathy, compassion, and feelings for others, moves a leader to increased interest in others and have influence in their organization.

Leaders should show high interest in others by listening to them in an open-minded way and accept criticism to develop corrective actions to improve on their leadership style. Lastly, the leaders should have restorative capability, especially in healthcare management (Asamani et al., 2016). Restorative talents ensure that a leader does not surrender when issues arise, but instead uses evidence-based practice (EBP) interventions and intuition to create innovative solutions to address the challenges. Health care leaders who deploy restorative talents create plans that support restorative care that include offering holistic care for patient to attain highest levels of functionality and autonomy.

Personal leadership philosophy guides the leader’s conduct and their reactions to others
and immediate situations. Imperatively, my leadership philosophy is utilizing positive core
values in developing expectations for those I serve while modeling transformational leadership
behavior which leads to the attainment of a set vision and corresponds to the overall attainment
of common purpose and goals.

Personal Leadership Philosophies

Besides providing safe, high-quality, and evidence-based clinical care, registered nurses must demonstrate effective leadership and management skills in different situations. Regardless of their position, the nurse is expected to promote staff and patient satisfaction, coordinate interprofessional care activities for the patients, manage limited resources, actively manage change, and promote evidence-based care (Cherry & Jacob, 2019). Therefore, nurse leaders must possess various traits to perform their roles well. These traits could be learned and adapted over time or personality characteristics of the nurse leader. Additionally, an effective leader must have a leadership philosophy and a belief system guiding decision-making. This paper will analyze my personal leadership philosophy, describing my core values, mission and vision statement, and the behaviors I would wish to strengthen.

Core Values

An effective leader must possess admirable traits and core values. Some of my values include self-confidence, decisiveness, emotional stability, people skills, trustworthiness, eagerness to accept responsibility, and perseverance. Vilma (2018) states that leaders are extremely self-assured because they are confident in themselves, making followers begin to share in this self-belief. Group members must be able to trust and depend upon the person leading them (Smikle, 2019). Strong leaders also take on responsibility and do not pass the blame to others, taking ownership of their mistakes and standing by their success. In addition, an effective leader possesses excellent interpersonal skills, paying attention and genuinely caring about helping followers succeed. A strong leader makes sound decisions and is confident in their choices, and they can avoid overreactions and control their emotions. These are the core values I possess, making me more confident that I am an effective leader.

Mission and Vision Statement

In a vision and mission statement, one encapsulates everything they would desire to achieve, defining what excellence and success look like to an individual. My mission is to apply the abilities and skills I possess as a nurse to support and provide inspiration to colleagues and positively transform healthcare in my community. My vision statement is “To create a community where everyone contributes to their fullest potential, providing culturally competent, compassionate, and excellent care to all while promoting community mental and physical wellness.

Analysis of CliftonStrengths Assessment

The CliftonStrengths assessment tool describes my profile as a learner, relator, achiever, focused, and strategic individual (Gallup, 2019). This evaluation is a true reflection of whom I am. Focus enables me to be assertive, making me direct in my dealings without becoming aggressive or overly pushy. Focus also enables me to streamline my goals, which is crucial for longevity and consistency. Amir et al. (2019) note that avoiding undertaking too many tasks at a time prevents nurse burnout. This strategy works in tandem with focus. After identifying and prioritizing where to place my efforts, I strategize the best way to attain the goals, making me an achiever. As a relator, I can interact well with team members and other leaders. Lastly, I possess a strong desire to succeed and commit to helping my groups reach different milestones.

A Description of Key Behaviors to Strengthen and a Development Plan

Healthcare professionals work in a culturally diverse society. Nurses must provide care to individuals with different values, beliefs, and perceptions of illness and health. Therefore, healthcare professionals must provide culturally competent care to all individuals. One of the areas I would like to improve is communicating with culturally diverse individuals. Effective communication is a foundational component that enhances the professional image of nurses while building strong relationships with colleagues and patients (Sibiya, 2019). One strategy I will use to achieve this is learning other languages, particularly the common courteous words in a language. I would also use mobile applications to learn sign language and the meaning of nonverbal cues of communication in other cultures. By acquiring these skills, I would be able to connect with more diverse communities, improve my interaction with various people, and effect positive change in care delivery in various settings.

The second area I would like to improve is my stress management strategies. An effective leader must not get stuck in a rut but be able to adapt quickly to changing situations. Stress is also identified as a significant prelude to burnout. As nurses maintain their relationships and tackle various critical issues as caregivers, they must develop efficient strategies to manage their anxiety and stress effectively. Failure to manage stress can have detrimental effects on caregivers’ physical and mental wellness, reducing their ability to fulfil their roles well. With nursing being one of the most stressful occupations, it is common to find burnout among nurses, affecting their productivity, performance, and personality at work (de Oliveira et al., 2019). Actions to reduce stress are of vital essence to preventing burnout. To manage my stress better, I will utilize self-reflection practices, incorporate physical exercises and leisure activities in my weekly schedules, and minimize stressors as much as possible. I will also be planning ahead of time and breaking goals into smaller tasks to promote my time utilization and increase my focus.

Conclusion

Leadership is an integral component in all parts of our society. Leadership is essential in ensuring activities run smoothly and goals are achieved in the healthcare sector, providing safe and high-quality care to patients. A personal leadership philosophy strengthens a leader’s skills, enabling them to be effective in their duties and responsibilities.

A Sample Answer 4 For the Assignment: NURS 6053 Personal Leadership Philosophies Essay

Title: NURS 6053 Personal Leadership Philosophies Essay

The core values of a leader are what determine the personal leadership philosophy of a leader. I believe that good leaders tend to have a set of unique characteristics that drive the way they act, their decision-making process, and the level of influence that they have on their followers (Laureate Education 2014). Therefore, my personal leadership philosophy is driven by a set of values that determine my underlying beliefs and guide my decision-making process and the actions that ultimately shape my daily routine and my career goals (Cortellazzo et al., 2019). Notably, one of the values that drives my personal leadership philosophy is the elements of empowerment and development.

I view leadership as a position of power. For this reason, as opposed to keeping the power and control to myself, I strive to ensure that I empower others and motivate them to amplify their own impact as well. Some of the strategies that I use to ensure empowerment include actions such as formal training of employees through mentorship and delegation of responsibilities. Another key value in my personal leadership philosophy is the element of communication. I believe that communication is a powerful tool of a leader and is the foundation for a relationship. In the work setting, centering communication enables communication of contexts to the team and fellow employees (Khan et al., 2020). It aids in ensuring that clear and concise expectations are set for the employees. In addition, it forms the basis for the provision and setting of constructive feedback both within and outside the work setting.

The mission and vision are the core elements of my leadership values. My personal leadership mission statement defines my purpose and objectives as a leader. It aids in illustrating my role and existence to my followers and to the organization. Similarly, my mission statement defines my purpose as a leader. The vision statement focus on my personal goals and aspirations as a leader (Roupnel et al., 2019). The vision and the mission statements are meant to ensure that my leadership approach remains uplifting and inspiring. My personal vision and mission statement are:

Vision: To continue working towards becoming the leader that I would wish to work for. I have to lead by being an example and integrating open communication while investing in my employees and followers. I will aid the organization in attaining its goals.

Mission: To serve as a leader by encouraging the development of innovative ideas and forward-thinking to ensure that my team can bring about technology solutions that will enhance and improve other people’s lives.

Based on the CliftonStrengths assessment, I tend to employ the qualities of restorative theme due to my ability to develop solutions to problems that arise. I strive to ensure that I refer to information sources and consult materials such as publications in order to overcome the challenges that I encounter both in the work setting and in my personal life. I am constantly in search of ways that would best make me a better person and a better leader. For this reason, I would wish that other people learn from me about the need to investigate a situation at hand. This means that it is in the best interest to learn from the failures and challenges experienced. Also, I tend to be a learner, given that I strive to acquire additional knowledge and skills from the daily experiences and interactions within and out of the work setting. I tend to persevere to the point where I acquire the skills and knowledge needed to attain a goal. I tend to look into the future and the best way to have the best outcome through present actions and decisions on the futuristic theme. The theme of connectedness manifests in the element of generosity that I show to people. I believe that this is the strategy that will aid in motivating and influencing other people to perform good deeds. Lastly, as a relator, I seek to form positive relationships with those that I interact with to get the best out of the interaction.

Two key behaviors that I intend to strengthen include the qualities of supportive and participative leadership. The two behaviors will best aid in ensuring that I lead by example and that I am able to provide the right guidance to my employees. The strategies that I plan to use to improve on these behaviors are through online tutorials and enrolling in classes that will aid in improving the two aspects. I will enroll in evening classes and attend training sessions in the health facility that I work for to improve on the two aspects of leadership. Upon completion of the classes for three months, I will have a certificate and will be able to exercise the two qualities with ease. Online training will be based on a wide variety of sources and the contributions from accomplished leaders in the health sector (Khan et al., 2020). Being participative as a leader is motivating to the other employees and improves the level of performance in the health organization.
