Title: Great Leader Discussion and Responses

Peer Response #1:

When we think of great leaders, we look to those individuals that have led people during the time of war, peace, and through political ups and downs. We look at these individuals because of what they accomplished and how they influence their followers. Naturally, there are challenges facing leaders, one being how to get followers to do something they otherwise would not do if they have the option not to do it. This challenge leads leaders to encourage followers to put aside their interests and promote others’ well-being. In modern times this is commonplace in our society politically and militarily. One of the main influences that leaders try to project is leading by example.

Leadership is a quality that anyone can have if they are willing to set their life in serving others. We do not have to look at modern times for great leaders. The Bible has several examples of great leaders who were Godly men who make up the foundation that a leader could be. There are undoubtedly good leaders in modern times, but this writer believes that great leaders have attributes common with leaders in the Bible. God chose specific individuals to help enrich and advance his kingdom. God anointed leaders to help bring people out of the darkness and evil in the world and into the kingdom of light. If we want to look for great leaders, we need to look at religious leaders, whether a priest/pastor or even someone involved in youth ministry or a simple volunteer(Clay, 2018)

Those who serve God as a leader serve a higher purpose. Leaders like Moses, Daniel, David and Abraham were all leaders in their own way. Some of them were anointed and became Kings, prophets, priests and dedicated their lives to God. These leaders remained faithful to God during good times and hard times, even when others turn from him. This writer believes that God anointed these individuals who are among the most significant leaders this world has known and will ever know. There will always be great leaders like Nelson Mandella, Martin Luther King, Winston Churchill, and Mahatma Gandhi who have all accomplished greatness. They could reach out and influence others and inspire millions throughout the world(Clay, 2018)

As it is written in Hebrews 13:7 “Remember your leaders who taught you the word of God. Think of all the good that has come from their lives, and follow the example of their faith”.

Peer Response #2:

One of the best well known and influential leaders in recent generations has been Winston Churchill who was most well known for being the British Prime Minister during World War II. While he didn’t fit into the idea of what a model Christian leader should be like due to some of his beliefs, he was still a great leader because of some of his other attributes. While Churchill is probably best known for his oratory skills and influential speeches and quotes, what drew me to his leadership was actually his success and abilities as a writer and his knowledge of language and how to use it to his benefit.

Linguistic Power

One of the reasons that Churchill is still so well remembered today for being a great leader is because of the things that he said and did and the language that he used. Crespo-Fernández (2013) explained how he used fierce oratory which became a symbol for his entire nation and their fight against Germany and how his determination was actually reflected in his use of different types of persuasive devices such as dysphemism (p. 312). If you don’t know what that means, it basically means using derogatory or unpleasant terms instead of more neutral ones. Mohler (2014) mentioned Winston Churchill as a great leader and explained that part of why he was a leader of world-changing courage was his ability to convince his entire nation that they had to win a war many thought was already lost (p. 16).

Leadership Characteristics

What are the characteristics that make a person in a leadership position truly considered a great leader? Gibson and Weber (2015) believed that Winston Churchill possessed many of them including taking risks and learning from failure, decisiveness, clear and simple communication, and commitment to self-improvement (pp. 78-81). As mentioned previously, his communication was not only simple and clear, but it also was fierce and inspired courage among his people. He also was not afraid to make decisions and then when they did not work out, he was able to learn from his failure and make better decisions going forward. In addition to constantly working on himself to improve, Churchill also requested that those serving under him gave him constant feedback and criticism and to speak their mind which opened up a flow of communication that proved very efficient (Gibson & Weber, 2015, p. 81).

Biblical Perspective

While Churchill may not have been a Christian or the model of a perfect person, he did provide several values that are important of great leaders and also apply to those who consider themselves Christian leaders. The way that Churchill led his people and the ability that he had to accept criticism and seek self-improvement proves that he was on the right path. I believe that God put Winston Churchill in a position to lead his nation through a terrible war against an evil enemy. “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind” (King James Bible, 1769/2017, 2 Timothy 1:7).

Plagiarism is highly prohibited. Please ensure you are citing your sources correctly using APA 7th edition. All assignments including discussion posts should be formatted in APA with the appropriate spacing, font, margin, and indents. Any papers not well formatted would be returned back to you, hence, I advise you review APA formatting style. I have attached a sample paper in APA format and will also post sample discussion responses in subsequent announcements.

Your initial discussion post should be a minimum of 200 words and response posts should be a minimum of 150 words. Be advised that I grade based on quality and not necessarily the number of words you post. A minimum of TWO references should be used for your initial post. For your response post, you do not need references as personal experiences would count as response posts. If you however cite anything from the literature for your response post, it is required that you cite your reference. You should include a minimum of THREE references for papers in this course. Please note that references should be no more than 5 years old except recommended as a resource for the class. Furthermore, for each discussion board question, you need ONE initial substantive response and TWO substantive responses to either your classmates or your instructor for a total of THREE responses. There are TWO discussion questions each week, hence, you need a total minimum of SIX discussion posts for each week. I usually post a discussion question each week. You could also respond to these as it would count towards your required SIX discussion posts for the week.

I understand this is a lot of information to cover in 5 weeks, however, the Bible says in Philippians 4:13 that we can do all things through Christ that strengthens us. Even in times like this, we are encouraged by God’s word that we have that ability in us to succeed with His strength. I pray that each and every one of you receives strength for this course and life generally as we navigate through this pandemic that is shaking our world today. Relax and enjoy the course!
