Title: NRS 440 Discussion: Events Contributing to the Nursing Shortage

The healthcare reform’s role in shifting the focus on a health care regime that promotes well-being and prevention instead of a disease-oriented system is to stop diseases and ensure health and fitness for all Americans. It’s so important that Americans are healthy and vital so that they are productive and innovative for the future of our nation.

One of the ways the healthcare reform has helped shift the focus from disease-oriented health care system to one of wellness and prevention is through the affordable healthcare act (ACA).

The ACA impacts all professionals working in health care, including public health professionals, health care administrators, and nurses. The ACA has further shifted the healthcare system’s focus from financially rewarding high cost medical care to one where promoting health and preventing disease results in financial gain.

In order to increase use of preventive services already available, we must change the way health care providers are reimbursed for their services. Current payment systems focus on volume of care over value, so that while physicians certainly have a personal interest in keeping their patients healthy, they have no economic incentive to provide the preventive services that will help their patients achieve that goal..

Health reform should also include an investment in evidence-based disease prevention programs that target behaviors that most influence an individual’s health and risk of contracting a preventable disease, such as physical activity, nutrition and tobacco use.

Nurses in preventative health care are tasked with improving the health of patients through evidence-based recommendations while encouraging individuals to receive preventative services such as screenings, counseling, and precautionary medications.

Title: NRS 440 Discussion: Events Contributing to the Nursing Shortage

The introduction of health reforms has made it significant to shift from focusing on a disease-oriented healthcare system to establishing wellness and prevention. This approach has significantly influenced the patient’s results and improved outcomes. The changes in practice are associated with supporting screening of critical conditions that affect patients, including cancer, diabetes, and many others. One of the healthcare reforms that has contributed to the shift in focus when providing services is Affordable Care Act. This is an example of legislation or reform of health which contributed to enhancing wellness and establishing preventive guidelines. The reform supports patients’ access to health services while addressing some health issues that affect them (Colorado Technical University, n.d). The introduction of health reforms has contributed to the focus on encouraging health professionals to engage in proactive healthcare while supporting the management of chronic health issues through prevention and wellness.

Healthcare reforms will continue as an example of trends currently witnessed because of the focus on having preventive and primary care for the patient. Additionally, this may be associated with the effort to continuously manage critical health issues according to programs that educate the community on wellness. Nurses play a significant role in supporting this trend of prevention and wellness for people. The shift may involve educating and training patients on wellness and prevention. Nurses are also required to engage in the management of critical conditions such as diabetes and cancer. This is associating appropriate awareness of such health complications while taking part in the monitoring of the practice effectively. The health community patents, such as social demographics, will also be determined, which may effectively prevent health issues. The availability of community nurses may be reliable in introducing approaches that have prevention in the community (Afolabi et al., 2019). Therefore the role of nursing in supporting a shift toward wellness and prevention is to provide educational training and advocacy.
