PSY349: Death & Dying

 PSY349: Death & Dying

Description

Option 1: My Alarms, My Words. Cost: Free. Set alarms on your phone for at least 5 different times, at least 1 hour apart. Label each of these alarms a different death-related word of your choice.

Option 2: WeCroak app. Cost: $0.99. Download and use WeCroak app. The app will send alerts 5 times per day. This app is available for both iOS and Android. Downloading any app means consenting to the permissions of that app. You should review these terms of use and decide whether you consent to them. If you do not consent to these terms, choose Option 1. There are many quotes and messages in this app – more than were possible to review by the instructor. If you are concerned that an unexpected message from the app may upset you, you should complete Option 1 and choose your own words for your alarm.

Regardless of which option you choose, you will submit the same assignment via blackboard. You will upload a .docx file with responses to the following instructions and questions. Use the sample assignment attached to these instructions as a template for your submission.

Note – it is possible to complete this assignment in one day, but the alerts may come at times when you are in class or otherwise busy. If it is not feasible to complete the assignment in a single day, it is also acceptable to complete it over several days or a week (just remember to set alarms for yourself if you choose Option 1). Screenshots and responses are only required for 5 alerts, even if you participated in this activity over multiple days. Also – remember to always silence your phones and disregard alerts while you are in class, driving, etc. If you have questions about how to install the app or program alerts on your phone, an online search will give you many tutorials but if these haven’t resolved the issue, come to office hours with the TAs or instructor and we will attempt to assist you. Make sure to plan ahead so that you have enough time to receive 5 alerts and complete your reflections.

Activity (A): Death Reminders Sample Submission: Option 1 (you only need to complete option 1 OR option 2) 1. Name: Sample Student 2. SBU ID: 123456789 3. I completed Option 1: My Alarms, My Words 4-6: see below for 5 screenshots and my responses. ——————————————-Message 1: Date: 9/3/19 Time: 10:16am 6 a. I had just arrived on campus. I had been thinking about what I needed to get done today between classes. I had not been thinking about graves. 6 b. Images came to mind more than thoughts. I started thinking about gravestones – first the cartoony Halloween cemeteries, then peaceful images like Arlington cemetery. I don’t really like horror or gore so I didn’t let myself spend much time thinking about zombies or crypts. I read about medieval cemeteries in my anthropology class last year, and started thinking about the gravesites we saw pictures of – tombs that were shaped like knights. ——————————————-Message 2: Activity (A): Death Reminders Sample Submission: Option 2 (you only need to complete option 1 OR option 2) 1. Name: Sample Student 2. SBU ID: 123456789 3. I completed Option 2: We Croak App 4-6: see below for 5 screenshots and my responses. ——————————————-Message 1: Date: 9/3/19 Time: 12:02pm 6 a. I was walking to lunch and thinking about what to order. I hadn’t been thinking about death before the alert but sat down on the bench for a minute to do my reflection on the way to east side dining. 6 b. I started thinking about the kinds of death that people expect or are somewhat scheduled or known (terminal illness, execution for death penalty) compared to the deaths that are unknown or unexpected (car accidents, sudden heart attacks). I also wondered whether, even for deaths from terminal illnesses, were these really knowable? The person with the terminal illness (and his or her family) may know the diagnosis, and may even have a prognosis from the doctor, but how often does the person or family (or doctor) know today is *the* day? ——————————————-Message 2:

  • The final grade of Incomplete is granted at the discretion of the instructor; however, students must meet certain specific criteria before this grade accommodation is even possible to consider.

Students also must pass the course at the time the request is made.
  • Please contact me personally if you are having difficulties in meeting course requirements or class deadlines during our time together. In addition, if you are experiencing personal challenges or difficulties, it is best to contact the Academic Counselor so that you can discuss the options that might be available to you, as well as each option’s academic and financial repercussions.

Grade Disputes

  • If you have any questions about a grade you have earned on an individual assignment or activity, please get in touch with mepersonally for further clarification.
  • While I have made every attempt to grade you fairly, on occasion a misunderstanding may occur, so please allow me the opportunity to learn your perspective if you believe this has occurred. Together, we should be able to resolve grading issues on individual assignments.
  • However, after we have discussed individual assignments’ point scores, if you still believe that the final grade you have earned at the end of the course is not commensurate with the quality of work you produced for this class, there is a formal Grade Grievance procedurewhich is outlined in the GCU Catalog and Student Handbook.
