Strategic planning is a process by which organizational leaders use thoughtful, organized planning to develop plans and goals for the future of the organization. (Whitney, 2018). “Strategic planning can enable organizations to be more intentional, nimble, and proactive in their work. It’s the process of assessing your current state, determining your desired future state, and then creating an action plan with clear strategies and tactics to bridge the gap between the two” (Orton, 2022). Strategic planning is important in the healthcare setting because by having a set goal for the organization, and everyone working towards that goal, it helps the organization reach that goal because all levels of employees are aware of the goal and are working together to achieve it. (Orton, 2022) Daniel V. Schidlow says that “strategic planning needs to be simple, time-limited, realistic and accurate. It cannot be the unending, purposeless exercise that many organizations experience” (Schidlow, 2008).

Budgeting, level of staff experience, levels of care provided, and time are all factors that organizations face when planning. (Whitney, 2008) There are a few different tools that can be used during strategic planning. One of these tools is the SWOT analysis which is a tool used to identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. (Whitney, 2008) In the article Successful Strategic Planning, Amber Orton shares 5 ideas that can help in strategic planning.

  • Create a strategic planning team – having a planning team helps with facilitating the planning process.
  • Hold a strategic planning retreat – this allows the organization to gather together to brainstorm ideas and create an action plan
  • Conduct a Survey or focus group – this allows an opportunity to gather additional information that can help identify strengths, weakness, opportunities and threats.
  • Use shared governance councils – involving the governance councils allows for the strategic plan to be validated and refined.
  • Develop, integrate, evaluate

Also important to strategic planning is delegation. Delegation is the use of personnel to accomplish certain tasks by allocation of responsibility (Whitney, 2018). Delegation can help with strategic planning to reach a common goal. Delegation also is important in nursing and often delegated tasks are assigned to unlicensed assistive personnel to provide competent care on behalf of the nurse.

And delegation is a strong attribute of both leaders and managers! Excellent observance.

Good informative post. Strategic planning has many tools including SWOT. Strategic planning should be the center of each nursing huddle in the morning, bu laying out plans and showing nurses and other staff how to better prepare themselves for a shift.

“Strategic planning is what nurses do as they plan daily, weekly, monthly, annually—5 years, 10 years, 20 years in the future—and what strategies they need to use to achieve established goals. In other words, planning is always happening, and it is a good practice for a nurse manager to be organized, thoughtful, and purposeful.”

Organization is HUGE- right? No one knows better than nurses who are students!

Strategic planning in healthcare is critical for healthcare organizations to succeed. Understanding how your organization operates is the key to creating an effective strategic plan for the entire healthcare system (Ehrlich et al., 2020). In addition, determining your company’s goals and setting a path to achieve these goals motivates your staff at every level to grow with you. It is essential because it improves communication among all chains, develops and shares a vision, increases employee motivation and engagement, and increases team cooperation and collaboration. Finally, future planning in an organization can be affected by things like budgeting, level of staff expertise, level of care provided, and time available (Whitney, 2018).

Hi Torri!

I liked what you shared in your post! It has a lot of good information as to what strategic planning is and the benefits of it. As I was reading an article by Amber Orton, it talked about what questions should be asked during strategic planning. Some of these questions included: “Where are we? What do we have to work with? Where do we want to be? How do we get there? and how will we know when we’re there?” (Orton, 2022). I really liked these questions because they can really help create a focus on what goals need to be made. She also shared 5 steps that can help in the strategic planning process. 1) complete an assignment 2) develop your goals 3) develop an action plan. 4) inform, educate, and implement 5) Evaluate and measure. (Orton, 2022) I find that these steps could be very helpful during the planning process.

Hi Torri,

Thanks for your post. And yes, understanding how one’s organization operate is really key to creating a very good strategic plan for the entire health care system. And the purpose of having a strategic plan and having a sense of direction in an organization is because it maximizes the options and acts as a practice for the uncontrollable future. Strategies help in setting of common goal in an organization and having a common vision to work on. The common goal allows for people within the organization to be committed to the achievement of the strategic plan in place which allows for problem to be solved.
