Beginning a new journey to obtain your MSN is exciting! Yet, it can be stressful and at times overwhelming. This week I invite you to reflect on Bible verses and their application to your journey towards your MSN degree. I hope that this allows you to reflect a little and find peace and joy as you continue through this first class. The following activity is not required, but substantial responses will count towards participation.

Review the following two Bible verses. Please apply at least one of these to your personal process of beginning your education journey and/or your role as an advanced professional nurse. If these two verses do not relate to you please feel free to share one that does and describe how it has impacted you.

Isaiah 28: 9-10 “Whom shall he teach knowledge? ……For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little and there a little”

Matthew 7: 7 “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you”

I look forward to reading your responses.

You have a great response and input role as an APRN. As an Advanced Practice Nurse, I will strive to impact health promotion and disease prevention in racial and ethnic minorities, especially from rural areas in the community. I will work towards addressing cultural differences between patients and healthcare providers that can result in holistic care to diagnose and treat patients while improving the patient’s compliance.

Holistic care includes treating patients’ physical, mental, and cultural or ethnic parts of their health (cultural sensitivity) through awareness of patients’ differences that exist without assigning value to them (Tucker et al., 2019).

Matthew 7: 7 “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you”

I love this Bible verse as it gives me strength and courage in my day-to-day life. This Bible verse always reminds me to continue trying to reach my goal. As it says prayer is a continuous process, it is not like you stop praying once you get your answer. This Bible verse related to my life because when I had obstacles immigrating to this country I never gave up, I seek and tried to pass those obstacles. I failed many times, and I already knew this Bible verse. So, it gave me strength and courage and I believed that God would help me to reach my goal. God always sees our challenging work and struggles but it is not necessary to get the answer right away if you wait and try increasingly, you will find the way. Thank You.

My choice to return to school and pursue my Master’s degree was prompted by my desire to do more for the health and healing of people of all ages. While I know that I have an impact on patients’ lives in my current role as a bedside nurse, I feel a responsibility to do more and contribute to improving our health care system as a whole. I take motivation from Phillipians 2:4, “Do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others”. This verse motivates me in the same way as a quote by Roman philosopher Marcus Tullius Cicero, “Not unto ourselves alone are we born”. With this motivation in mind, I believe that I will persist in my endeavor to complete this program and balance it with my work schedule in order to meet my responsibility to others.

Philippians 4: 13 I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

This is one of my favorite verse from the Bible and I find my self reciting it daily in my head and out loud at times for it gave me confidence and assurance that everything will be ok no matter what the situation is. Coming to America with no family or close relatives to rely on was full of heartache and disappointment . Had to fend for myself as best as I possible could. Eventually with many nights of prayers I got settled and went back to school to peruse a new career path in nursing. Working full time, going to school and balancing a family with three small children was no easy task with much trials and tribulations i graduated from nursing school. Soon after graduation i began working in the emergency room as a brand new nurse it was very challenging however i was able to over come all obstacles just by believing I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

Hi Melanie, the bible verse that you mentioned, Matthew 7: 7 “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you” relates to my goal. Growing up as a catholic I have been taught bible verses and it did give me strength when I am weak. I have strong faith in the lord and I believe all obstacles I can overcome. Though this is the start of my journey of becoming a nurse practitioner, I can achieve and finish what I have started with God as the center of my education. In addition to the verse that you’ve posted, the bible verse Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight” also helps me to keep going.

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire, you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.

God’s word teaches me about having faith in life and strengthens me to be a better person as a nurse, especially working at the bedside during pandemics. This verse is always on top of my mind; we shall not be afraid of the unknown, and it doesn’t stop me from practicing direct patient care. We now know that covid-19 is here to stay for the foreseeable future; we may learn how to live together and co-exist in the same universe. Thereby giving me the strength and courage to move beyond, I decided to return to school and pursue my Master’s degree to move a step forward in my life, a new chapter. I know I’m not alone when I face challenges during my life journey.

My decision to pursue the current MSN program and my nursing journey was necessitated by my desire to fulfill the goal of achieving specialized knowledge and advanced nursing skills. In agreement to your claim, the journey can be exciting and challenging at times. To encourage me through this journey, I have identified a verse that clearly speaks about my experience this far: Psalm 34:4–5 “I sought the LORD, and He answered me and delivered me from all my fears. Those who look to Him are radiant, and their faces shall never be ashamed.” This is a motivational verse that does not only address on the challenges ahead, but also speaks of the confidence and the hard work through which my academic and professional goals can be achieved.

I love how you express the desire to pursue advanced education. Nurses, for me, are lifelong learners. Education is not just for financial gain but for the advancement of our knowledge and enrichment of our life experiences. Like you, my life is always influenced by my desire to become better, whether it is via my profession or my personal life. I was once a very fearful student. I have no confidence and constantly second-guessing myself. I overcome that by my faith in God and by always holding on to God’s words and promises. Thank you.

The Code of Ethics guideline emphasizes the importance of patient autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice, which intends to serve as a guide throughout a nurse’s professional practice. Awareness and adherent to Code of Ethics, also protecting patient rights is one of the paramount duties of medical professionals and other healthcare personnel (Jihye & Heeyoung, 2023), should be honored.

Patients’ rights to their values and preferences must be respected. For instance, religious or cultural values, such as seeking alternatives to blood transfusions (Jihye & Heeyoung, 2023). No healthcare professional has the right to impose their personal ideas or views on a patient, colleague, or anyone except in the case of immediate harm to self or others. Take for example, a parent may not act or decide in the best interest of their child’s (minor) healthcare decision. Health care profession have an obligation to protect the patient (minor) in such instance. But through educating the patient and interdisciplinary collaboration,

Christian worldview principle strives for equality, that all humans are created in God’s image, equal, and should be treated with the principle of justice, compassion, dignity, respect, and helping one another especially, those in need/vulnerable. We are unique in the way we have relationships with other humans, that is the force behind interaction. Cultural competence is a must in the 21st century of healthcare era.

Values and beliefs influence our world view and the decisions we make in life, whether it is personal or professional. When one’s beliefs and values are deeply rooted, often times, we can project those beliefs on others without being aware of it. This can cause conflicts in any environment.

I had a co-worker who was a Jehovah’s Witness. She became really ill and needed a blood transfusion and other treatments. Jehovah Witness believe that blood is unclean and blood transfusions are an unclean practice. She refused the blood transfusion. Because of this, the doctor’s felt it was unsafe to perform any surgical procedures due to her unstable condition. Many of the doctors and nurses that we worked with encouraged her to have the blood transfusion because it could save her life. She continued to refuse and ultimately passed away from her illness. We as a team had a conversation about her decision because many felt like she made the wrong decision and even showed anger toward her. I expressed to the team that although it would not have been the decision I made for myself, I supported her decision. I also told her this before she passed away.  I may not have agreed with her decision, but I respected it and did not try to change it. I was taught growing up to have respect for others regardless of our differences.

As nurses, we have to learn how to care for others in a way that respects their beliefs and values. In order to do this, we must determine the “who, what, and why” of the patient’s that we care for. We must determine who we are caring. We must learn what their cultural beliefs and values are. We must also examine why we are making the care decision that we are making; is it based on it being best decision for the patient that will provide the most effective care and also aligns with the patient’s values and beliefs?; or, are we making care decisions based on our beliefs and values and not taking into consideration the beliefs and comfort of the patient? The principle of “do no harm” includes understanding the population in which you care for so that your decisions for their care aligns with their beliefs and values. When you force your beliefs upon someone else, you cause mental harm and discomfort.
