Quality improvement processes are crucial for achieving excellent health outcomes. Before examining personal experiences of quality improvement, it is crucial to reflect on what the process entails. Nursing research depicts quality improvement as the framework health care organizations use to systematically improve care (CMS.gov, 2021). Its primary objective is to standardize processes to reduce variation and improve outcomes. Quality indicators include prevention, patient safety, inpatient quality indicators, and others (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2020). Therefore, any effort to improve any indicator improves patient outcomes.

As a participant, I have experienced several quality improvement processes within a health care setting. An example highly practical in today’s practice is assessing the impacts of a nursing shortage and empowering nurses to cope with the adverse effects of the shortage. As a prevalent practice problem, a nursing shortage leads to exhaustion of nursing staff, triggering nurse burnout (Dall’Ora et al., 2020; Shah et al., 2021). Consequently, the nursing staffing cannot address patient needs timely and comprehensively, lowering the quality of care. Assessing the manifestations and the magnitude of impacts helped the organization to respond effectively through empowerment and motivation programs.

Quality improvement processes have different pros and cons. In agreement with Hill et al. (2020), quality improvement is the foundation of effective, efficient, and safe care. Regarding pros, medication error prevention interventions such as technology adoption improve accuracy and timeliness of care. They are also problem-driven processes. However, such interventions are usually costly to implement, particularly in small organizations. Employee empowerment programs such as resilience building and nurse motivation are people-centered and sustainable. However, they are time-consuming and require intensive planning.
