Tone is as important in writing just like in speech or speaking (Tuohy, 2019). The choice of one’s words, punctuations and other components like use of abbreviations and even emojis all create certain tones from the speaker or conveyor of the message. For instance, the use of different punctuation marks in a text message can convey diverse tones (Sibiya, 2018). For example, “Thank a lot!” and “Thank you?” demonstrate different tones. In the first instance, “Thank you a lot!” shows the warmth and positive response, albeit from a surprised perspective. “Thank you a lot!” is also more informal and idiomatic implying that it expresses a sociable approach and appreciation from an individual. The tone here is more informal but sociable and affirming to the individual getting it. ‘
Conversely, “Thank you” is more formal, expressive as well as assertive as it confirms that one has tremendous acknowledgement
based on what the situation. Here, the one is sincere, compassion and with self-confidence and is not feigned. However, in the former, the tone is about attention and enthusiasm for the help received or the favor done.
Conveying different tones to audiences happens based on the type of words and phrases that one uses. Tone is an essential component of effective communication. For instance, the phrase “come here” can have different meanings based on the tone used. For example, “come here,” is a command but with persuasion and warmth. However, “come here!” is an order that must be respected and the tone is more commanding (Zlevor, 2018). The use of such phrase can have diverse meanings to audiences based on the tone deployed.
