In the world today, health-care institutions and organizations seek to improve the operations of care systems to optimize patient outcomes. Often, the nursing profession is the main target in any attempt to develop practice options that aim to enhance care service since the staff spends the longest time with patients in health settings (McCance & McCormack, 2017). The nursing profession is well guided by theory, evidence-based practice and models of care that provides a framework on delivery of service. One of the latest models of practice is the Person-Centered Nursing (PCN) Framework (Li & Porock, 2014). This model focuses on the attributes of nursing professionals, the care environment and the person-centered outcomes with respect to health services administered to patients. Even though there is an increasing interest in the benefit of the PCN model in contemporary care practices, a gap remains on how the framework can be implemented. This is due to a lack of clarity among health workers on what constitute PCN and best possible methods that can be used to practice the model. Based on this argument, the present article is based on a succinct analysis of the Person-Centered Nursing Framework with a specific focus on the Family Nurse Practitioner Track. Besides, the discussion aims to explore how the PCN address each nursing metaparadigm: person, health, nursing, and environment. Furthermore, the study will focus on how the model qualifies as a theoretical framework in the nursing profession and how PCN can be applied in the future role as a family nurse practitioner.

Overview of the Selected Model

Patient-centered nursing framework is a model of care that focuses on treating people as individuals, respecting their rights, building mutual trust, understanding as well as developing a therapeutic relationship between a nurse and a patient. In 2006, the PCN framework was developed by McCormack and McCance and was was later updated in 2010 in a bid to provide a foundation of nursing practice in a diverse and complex care setting (McCance & McCormack, 2017). Ideally, person-centered nursing is based on the right to self-determination as well as a mutual understanding between a caregiver and a person. There are four concepts within the nursing metaparadigm addressed by the PCN model. Human beings or the patients are the first in the line and denotes the recipient of care. Nurses give priority to patients to improve health outcomes. The second concept

Application of the PCN Model to Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP)

According to Love and Pinkowitz (2013), the PCN framework synthesizes evidence and provides recommendations for the best nursing practice based on patient assessment. In my future role as an FNP, I will use the model to categorize patient care into the domains of structure, process, and outcome. In other words, I will analyze the patient’s environment, develop diagnosis as per the recommended nursing guidelines, plan for care interventions and monitor quality outcomes as I avail services to clients (Santana et al., 2018). In addition, PCN framework will enable me to communicate effectively and develop respect to patients in a bid to provide compassionate care.
