Assignment: Self-Esteem and Impression Management Essay
Assignment Self-Esteem and Impression Management Essay
Social psychology plays an important role when it comes down to determining the perspective that one has about themselves. The processes that play a role in determining one’s behavior also form an important part of the same. Therefore, processes and theories such as social tuning, impression management, social comparisons, mindsets, causal theories, or intrinsic/extrinsic motivation play a significant role in the same. The present paper will thus consider the analysis of the above factors based on their rudimentary premises as it relates to personal examples.
Impression Management
As regards psychology, impression management relates to the efforts that people put in place in order to affect the perception of other people concerning an event, person or an object. Impression management can be achieved through a variety of processes such as regulating and then controlling information within social interactions entailing processes such as praises, compliments and gifting so as to create a favorable impression. Studies such as Eliot et al. (2018) reveal that the impression management is particularly prominent at the adolescent phase of an individual. I personally interacted with impression management from way back in junior school when my mother deployed ingratiation to manage the impression of a waitress concerning me.
During that period, there was a restaurant around the corner of our place that we used to visit occasionally. For some reason, the head waitress did not appear to like me; however, I could not put a reason to it. She appeared all moody and sometimes cold each time she would bump into me. Nevertheless, I would notice that she was warm to other customers visiting the restaurant. The situation really disturbed my mother to the extent that she began to flirt with the head waitress. Each time we would visit the restaurant she would great the waitress and ask how she was doing. She would then complement her necklace and or even hairstyle and shower her with praises that she was amongst the hardest working waitresses at the bar. Over time, the method seemed to work as the waitress began to smile at me and sometimes even make little jokes as a result of the influence of my mother’s flattery.
Social Tuning
Psychologists regard this process as allowing people to influence one’s attitude. They further argue that its presence implies that individuals do not control their own actions consciously and as such, have to rely on the environment. Social tuning occurs where one lack self-esteem and they want to be liked or accepted by another group or people. Social tuning has personally affected me while growing up. There was a time that I changed schools and moved to a relatively wealthy neighborhoods in the United States. Given my background, I was not used to life of luxury and excellent dressing. However, when I moved into the school, I noticed that most of my new friends were dressing in splendid uniforms that were creased and their behavior was a bit polished. They would not behave in a manner that could embarrass their class. Given that I did not have much of a choice, I also started behaving in a similar manner, For instance, I changed my clothes and altered my accent in order to fit into the cohort. The social tuning also occurred when I changed my walking style to align with my new friends’.
Therefore, the above instance offered a classic case of the measures that can be undertaken to improve aspects such as self-presentation when communicating nonverbally. When I altered way of dressing and walking style, I realized that I became more accepted into the group as I was considered more posh by its members. It was evident during the period that my change in behavior was related to the more posh group that I had joined. The changes that I made also affected the cognitive biases of the group as they stopped seeing me as a low-class girl and considered myself as part of them.

Social Comparisons
Social comparison is a human phenomenon wherein people compare themselves to others. Social comparison can either occur in a positive or negative manner. For instance, my Mathematics teacher used to compare the performances of a consistently top
student with that of a consistently bottom student at any given opportunity. However, the top student in Mathematics used to perform poorly in other subjects where the other one used to defeat him. Thus, while the top Math student used to feel superior, I came to realize that it was only a matter of perception as the other student was comparatively better in other subjects.
Recently, research has revealed that the quality of social networking as opposed to the frequency of the same exposes one to negative mental thoughts. Nevertheless, no studies have been conducted to discover the mechanisms that lead to this phenomenon (Bebermeier, Echterhoff, Bohner, & Hellmann, 2015). The instances of social comparison have increased with the advent of social media platforms such as Facebook as people want to compare themselves to their peers in life. Consequently, the societal pressure thereof has led to existence of individuals who have low self-esteem just like the poorly performing student in Maths. Yet, there are other areas in life and academics that one could be flourishing compared to their peers.
Extrinsic/Intrinsic Motivation
Motivation, whether extrinsic or intrinsic is associated with personal satisfaction through managing impressions. Whereas extrinsic motivation sets one to strive towards gaining satisfaction from fulfilling external objectives, intrinsic motivation is an internal type of motivation (Tamilmani, Rana, Prakasam, & Dwivedi, 2019). In this kind of motivation, one will always strive for a goal of personal satisfaction. My perception of these two motivations are shaped by personal examples concerning my idols in sports. Working as a team, players of various sports would be extra motivated to play at the beginning of the season, the middle and towards the end when there is a price to be worn. However, I have also observed that while that is true for a team, truly great players use intrinsic motivation to become the best in their position and/or sports.
The above example illustrate that while extrinsic motivation relies on tangible factors, intrinsic motivation relies on intangible ones. Moreover, the issue of motivation reveals that human nature is not uniform and what motivates one person may not have an effect on another one. Further, studies have revealed that extrinsic motivation has certain benefits such as helping one to finish a task that they are disinterested in, which applies to managing their impression. Indeed, extrinsic motivation could be used to improve self-esteem as one may change their perception of themselves using it due to the presence of a reward.
Assignment: Self-Esteem and Impression Management Essay Conclusion
Therefore, self-esteem and impression management play crucial roles in social psychology. Numerous events and experiences from one’s environment can help influence the perception that one has on themselves and the one that other people have on them. Thus, the paper has revealed the premises of oneself as they are based on certain behavior processes.

If you however cite anything from the literature for your response post, it is required that you cite your reference. You should include a minimum of THREE references for papers in this course. Please note that references should be no more than 5 years old except recommended as a resource for the class. Furthermore, for each discussion board question, you need ONE initial substantive response and TWO substantive responses to either your classmates or your instructor for a total of THREE responses. There are TWO discussion questions each week, hence, you need a total minimum of SIX discussion posts for each week. I usually post a discussion question each week. You could also respond to these as it would count towards your required SIX discussion posts for the week.
